What are the Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black?

The Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black are the new accessible iterations of the iconic Bonneville moniker. The baby Bonneville’s are built on Triumph’s 400cc TR Series platform. The motorcycles combine iconic Bonneville design paired with modern British craftsmanship and engineering.

Both Bonneville T40 and T40 Black s share the same core mechanical package but differ in their finishes. The T40 features slightly brighter colours along with classic details, while the T40 Black, as the name suggests, adopts a much darker theme.

What design features do they have?

The Bonneville T40 and T40 Black feature classic Bonneville design language inspired by the proportions and styling of 1960s models. Signature elements include a sculpted teardrop fuel tank in a two-tone paint scheme, a round LED headlight, longer mudguards, a classic bench seat, twin rear shocks, spoked wheels, and a peashooter-style silencer.

The motorcycles also feature a traditionally styled front fork and a clean, uncluttered engine profile, riding on 18-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels with lightweight aluminium rims, giving off instant Bonneville inspiration.

How is the T40 Black different?

The Triumph Bonneville T40 Black is a darker, more contemporary take on the standard T40, while keeping the same classic Bonneville silhouette. It features Matt Pewter Grey and Matt Phantom Black bodywork, and the darker theme extends to several components such as powder-coated engine casings, a blacked-out header pipe, a black peashooter silencer and gloss black finish rims.

What engine powers the Bonneville T40?

The Triumph Bonneville T40 is powered by a revised 400cc TR Series single-cylinder engine. The engine has been retuned to deliver stronger low-end torque, intuitive throttle response and a relaxed power delivery. The engine produces 32 PS at 7,000rpm and 36Nm at 5,000rpm in the global specification.

The Indian-spec Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black use a 350cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder TR Series engine, which produces 29 PS at 7,000rpm and 31.2Nm of peak torque at 5,500rpm.

What riding modes and electronic aids are available?

Despite its retro facade, the Bonneville T40 comes equipped with modern technology such as five riding modes: Road, Rain and Eco modes, along with two customisable modes. Each mode alters the throttle response, traction-control intervention and ABS behaviour. Additional features and rider aids include:

  • Cruise control.

  • Lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS.

  • Lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering Traction Control.

  • Emergency Deceleration Warning.

  • Full-LED lighting.

  • Self-cancelling indicators.

What instrument and connectivity features does it have?

The Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black feature a new four-inch, full-colour TFT display housed inside a traditional circular instrument unit. The instrument cluster offers key rider information and access to motorcycle settings. The instrument cluster also comes with smartphone connectivity which enables full map navigation is available through the Triumph Navigation App, media controls and answer calls handsfree.

What chassis, suspension and braking hardware does the Triumph Bonneville T40 use?

The Triumph Bonneville T40 uses a dedicated chassis with lightweight spoked wheels, measuring 18 inches at the front and 17 inches at the rear. Suspension duties are handled by conventional front forks and twin rear shocks, while braking comes from a twin-piston front calliper, a one-piece-style front disc and braided brake lines.

What colours are available?

The standard Triumph Bonneville T40 is available in three heritage-inspired two-tone colour schemes:

  • Aegean Blue and Fusion White.

  • Meriden Blue and Tangerine Orange.

  • New England White and Jet Black.

The T40 Black is finished in Matt Pewter Grey and Matt Phantom Black.

What is the price and availability of the Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black?

Triumph has not announced global pricing for the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black. The company says pricing will be revealed in early 2027, ahead of the motorcycle reaching the dealership floors.

However, Triumph has disclosed the pricing for its Indian Spec models. In India, the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black are priced at ₹2.80 lakh each, ex-showroom.
