Antonelli Triumphs in Chaotic Monaco Grand Prix as Leclerc Crashes Out

Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli claimed a remarkable victory in the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix after surviving a race filled with retirements, penalties, Safety Cars and a red flag.

Kimi Antonelli delivered one of the most impressive performances of his young Formula 1 career to win a dramatic and incident-packed Monaco Grand Prix.

The streets of Monte Carlo produced chaos from the opening laps, with Max Verstappen’s race ending almost immediately after a technical issue left him stranded shortly after the start. The four-time World Champion was forced to retire on lap two, bringing an abrupt end to a difficult weekend for Red Bull.

While Verstappen’s race unravelled, Antonelli made a strong getaway from pole and quickly established control at the front. Hamilton settled into second place ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc, who initially appeared poised to challenge for a podium in front of his home crowd.

As the race developed, tyre degradation and reliability concerns became recurring themes. Hadjar battled a series of technical problems, yet somehow managed to keep himself in contention. Behind him, George Russell spent much of the opening stint applying pressure while several drivers struggled with overheating tyres and brake-related concerns.

Mercedes’ race became significantly more comfortable when Antonelli began building a sizeable advantage over Hamilton. By the first round of pit stops, the Italian had established enough of a gap to retain a commanding lead despite the strategic shuffle.

The race’s complexion changed again when a series of penalties were handed out for pit lane speeding offences. Hamilton, Russell, Gasly, Perez, Piastri and several others were all penalised at various stages, creating uncertainty throughout the top ten and opening opportunities for drivers running further down the order.

Another major storyline unfolded at McLaren. Lando Norris spent much of the race battling reliability concerns before eventually retiring with a power unit issue on lap 45, eliminating a potential challenger from the fight for the podium positions.

The decisive turning point arrived with just 18 laps remaining. Lance Stroll crashed at the final corner after locking his right-front tyre, triggering the first Safety Car period of the afternoon. The neutralisation prompted widespread pit stops, but Ferrari’s strategy immediately raised questions from Leclerc, who openly challenged the team’s decision to bring him into the pits.

Those frustrations would soon prove irrelevant.

Following the restart, disaster struck for the Monegasque driver. Running in third place and chasing Hamilton, Leclerc lost control and crashed into the barriers, ending his hopes of delivering a home podium. Furious over the team radio, the Ferrari driver blamed persistent brake problems for the accident that ultimately ended his race.

The incident triggered a second Safety Car and, shortly afterwards, a red flag after officials discovered damage to the track surface.

When the race resumed for a final sprint to the finish, Antonelli faced one last challenge from Hamilton. The seven-time World Champion briefly threatened to attack into the opening corners, but the Mercedes youngster immediately reasserted control and began pulling away.

Further behind, Russell’s afternoon unravelled when he was handed a drive-through penalty for failing to correctly serve an earlier sanction during the first Safety Car period. The penalty dropped him out of contention and removed another obstacle from Hadjar’s path to the podium.

Antonelli steadily extended his advantage over the closing laps and crossed the finish line 6.6 seconds clear of Hamilton to secure a memorable Monaco victory. Hadjar completed the podium after Gasly lost positions due to accumulated penalties, capping off an extraordinary drive despite spending much of the race battling technical problems.

The result marks another major milestone in Antonelli’s breakthrough Formula 1 season and further strengthens Mercedes’ position in both championships as the campaign heads into its next phase.
