The new Lamborghini Urus SE is a sub-800hp plug-in hybrid super SUV

It boasts as many as ten driving modes and 60kms of pure-EV drive range

Lamborghini stunned the world in 2017 with the launch of its first-ever production SUV, the Urus. Seven years later, the brand now attempts to pull off yet another first at the Auto China Beijing 2024 with the launch of the Lamborghini Urus SE – the first hybrid plug-in version of the super SUV.

Commenting on the launch of the Urus SE, Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman & CEO said, “In just a few years, the Urus has become our brand’s bestseller, enabling Lamborghini to attract new customers and strengthen its position in the most important markets. With the Urus SE, we’ve taken another step towards the future in line with our Direzione Cor Tauri 2.0 strategy, moving ahead with the electrification of the range and the path toward decarbonization that began with the introduction of the Revuelto super sports car in March 2023.”

Unlike the standard Urus, the Urus SE gets powered by “two hearts – one thermal and the other electric”, as Lamborghini likes to put it. The twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine, now producing 611hp and 800Nm torques, gets reworked to work in optimal synergy with an electric powertrain, churning out 189hp and 483Nm torques for combined power output figures of 789hp and 950Nm torques. Regardless of a 25.7-kWh lithium-ion battery getting embedded beneath the load floor, the Urus SE betters the standard Urus in power-to-weight ratio. Performance figures of a 312 kph top speed and a 3.4 sec time for the 0-100kph sprint round up the Urus SE to bag the tag of the most powerful Urus ever.

Additionally, Lamborghini decided to embed the electric motor within the 8-speed automatic transmission. This aids the V8 engine with an additional boost whilst also rendering the new Urus SE a 100% electric 4WD vehicle capable of travelling more than 60 km in EV mode. The Urus SE further debuts a new centrally-located longitudinal electric torque vectoring system capable of distributing torque continuously between front and rear axles, allowing “on-demand” oversteering capabilities to convey the feel of a purebred super sports car.

“We took inspiration from the Revuelto with the floating engine bonnet, achieving a very clean and muscular front design” stated Lamborghini Design Director Mitja Borkert on the Urus SE’s updated looks. He continued, “The state-of-the art front light system integrates a new, distinctive DRL signature. The rear emphasizes a wider stance with a focus on the new diffuser and low-mounted license plates, while the rear mesh takes inspiration from Lamborghini super sports cars like the Gallardo. The interior design follows our ‘feel like a pilot’ philosophy, enhancing interaction between the driver and the digital system.”

Aerodynamic efficiency has been improved across the car courtesy of the design evolution. The new spoiler and diffuser combo increases rear downforce by 35% at high speeds compared to the Urus S. New under-body air vents and revamped air ducts cool the engine and mechanical components with 15% more efficiency.

The cabin is a reworked affair as well with the fitment of a larger screen – now 12.3 inches – installed in the centre of the dashboard. The software features a new version of the Human Machine Interface (HMI) with graphics consistent with the one found on the Revuelto flagship supercar and a dedicated telemetry system for the SE.

Lamborghini’s “tamburo” selector unit on the centre console, utilised to select drive typically featured six drive modes on the Urus S. The Urus SE pumps up to ten drive modes with four new electric performance strategies comprising EV Drive, Hybrid, Performance, and Recharge options. EV Drive allows all-electric driving for 60kms at speeds up to 130kph post which the V8 automatically joins in. Hybrid provides maximum efficiency with the most optimal synergy between the combustion engine and the electric motor. Recharge recharges up to 80% of the battery while maintaining optimal performance and Performance allows the driver to exploit the full potential of the Urus SE even in off-road or non-asphalt road conditions.
