Volkswagen confirms there will be no electric Beetle

It's official: the Beetle will not be making a comeback in the form of a neo-retro electric model

After the highly successful ID.Buzz, hopes were high for the return of the legendary Beetle, reinterpreted in ID style. But at a press conference held during the testing of the Tiguan prototypes, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer dashed all hopes. It would be completely illusory to see the Beetle return in the form of an electric model.

According to Schäfer, the Beetle has indeed had its day, just like the Sirocco, which is unlikely to return any time soon. As you will have noticed, coupés and three-door models are no longer in favour with SUVs. The strategy is clear: Volkswagen needs to invest massively in electric vehicles to prepare for the future, which will mean making obvious concessions. Priority will therefore be given to models that are likely to bring in the highest returns, even if this means overshadowing the other vehicles in the range.

New models are not out of the question

The Golf and Tiguan will become fully electric models and will temporarily cohabit with the ID range before eventually replacing it. However, Volkswagen’s entire future will not revolve around the compact car and the SUV alone. Schäfer has confirmed that new models are still needed to remain competitive. But that will come later.
