4th round : Kyrgios and Tiafoe eliminate the two favourites of the tournament

Medvedev had the opportunity to get revenge on Kyrgios after their clash in Montreal and Nadal to plot his route to potentially his third Grand Slam of the year. But they missed the boat. The reason ? The exceptional performances of Nick Kyrgios and Frances Tiafoe. In parallel, Rublev beat Norrie, Kachanov had the last word on Carreno-Busta and Alcaraz finally got the better of Marin Cilic. On the Italian side, Sinner and Berrettini both had to fight hard to get past Ilya Ivashka and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina respectively. Whatever happens now, one of the last 8 players in the field will win his first ever Grand Slam title.

Kyrgios conquers Medvedev again

After dominating him in Montreal in the Masters 1000, Nick Kyrgios repeated the performance by triumphing over Daniil Medvedev, this time in the Grand Slam, on New York night. Another top-class performance and a four-set victory (7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2) allowed the Aussie to reach the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows for the first time. The first set was evenly matched and saw Kyrgios take the match after an emotional tiebreak (13-11).

After such a set, Kyrgios relaxed, Medvedev took advantage and maintained a very high level to achieve the double break. After being down 5-1, the Aussie woke up but it wasn’t enough to get the second debreak (3-6).

Nick reopened the Kyrgios show at the start of the third set, closing out a point that was his to win and giving him a break point in a lunar manner. However, he still managed to break early in the set and held on to his lead in earnest to regain control of the match.

It was in four sets that the Aussie defeated the world’s number one player, quickly breaking again and outplaying Medvedev in the final set (6-2). With a consistency that we are becoming accustomed to and a level of play that matches his talent, placing him among the very best on the circuit, Nick Kyrgios can once again begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel with a first Grand Slam title after failing to reach the Wimbledon final.

Tiafoe overcomes Nadal

The current world No. 26 has achieved the two greatest feats of his career at the same time. Defeating Rafael Nadal and reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. The American Frances Tiafoe was not the last to put on a show either, setting the match alight with numerous forehand, backhand and service shots, much to the delight of the local crowd (a good number of them anyway) and getting the better of the Majorcan bull (6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3).

In a world where the future US Open final was supposed to be a symbol of ultra-entertaining tennis, Nick Kyrgios and Frances Tiafoe would be facing each other on September 11 to fight for the graal.
