The tech and thought that made the Ferrari Hypersail

• Ferrari introduces its 100-foot foiling ocean monohull, the Ferrari Hypersail, at Milan Design Week. • The vessel combines offshore sailing technology with automotive design. • The colour palette features Grigio Hypersail carbon fibre and Nuovo Giallo Fly.

What is the design philosophy behind the Ferrari Hypersail?

The Ferrari Hypersail operates as an open innovation platform. It brings together the Ferrari Tech Team, the Ferrari Design Studio, and naval architect Guillaume Verdier. Together, they apply Ferrari’s automotive design principles to the nautical world. The design focuses on engineering boundaries and the essence of form. Consequently, every shape and line results from the physical interaction between wind, water, and speed.

How does engineering dictate the boat’s shape?

Performance dictates the aesthetic choices for the Ferrari Hypersail. The design team transformed aerodynamic, hydrodynamic, and structural constraints into a streamlined silhouette. This shape echoes the proportions of the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 models. Furthermore, the coachroof graphics mirror the Le Mans-winning Hypercar 499P.

To optimise performance, the engineering team integrated a foiling control system based on automotive developments. Also, the vessel captures renewable energy from the wind, sun, and its own movement. Specifically, the deck features walkable solar panels. The team positioned these panels through a solar exposure study to ensure energy capture without restricting crew movement. Finally, the team selected a monohull design to maximise both hydrodynamic and aerodynamic efficiency.

Why did Ferrari choose these specific colours?

The new livery bridges the vessel’s design with Ferrari’s brand history. The hull primarily uses carbon fibre in a grey shade called Grigio Hypersail. This colour highlights the material’s lightweight nature.

Meanwhile, the cabin, foils, and hull lines feature a shade of yellow known as Nuovo Giallo Fly. This colour references the yellow helmet of driver Luigi Musso. It also connects linguistically to the boat’s foiling nature. The colour separation recalls cars like the 512 BB. Additionally, other details draw inspiration from the LaFerrari and the F80, integrating the brand’s design codes into the offshore vessel.

Where is the vessel exhibited during Milan Design Week?

From the 22nd to the 26th of April 2026, the brand is showcasing the project at the Ferrari Flagship Store in Milan. Visitors can explore an exhibition path detailing the Ferrari Hypersail’s design and engineering. Additionally, the Ferrari Design Studio created a lighthouse installation. This sculpture sits on the HIGHLINE Milano main terrace, overlooking Piazza del Duomo.
