Bentley Unveils The New Flying Spur Speed

It is one of the last models to house the iconic W12 under the bonnet.

We’ve already had ‘Speed’ versions of the new Continental GT and the new Bentayga. And now, we’ve got the third kind – the new Bentley Flying Spur Speed. While the basic recipe for a ‘Speed’ model remains identical, all three derivatives offer distinguished tastes. The new Flying Spur Speed is essentially the ultimate version of the British brand’s super saloon. Also, because of the emission regulations getting tighter by the day, it is one of the last models to boast the iconic W12.

The Speed derivative slots above the ‘S’ in the luxo-barge’s line-up. And the main reason behind that is the engine. Where the latter makes do with a V8, the Speed packs a 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12. That offers 626bhp/900Nm, 84bhp/130Nm more than what the ‘S’ has on tap. The increment results in a 0-100kmph sprint time of less than 4 seconds (the V8-powered variant takes 0.4 seconds longer), whereas the Speed can hit 333kmph at full stretch.

Coupled with the powerplant are an 8-speed automatic transmission and an active all-wheel-drive system. The saloon has a clutched system, delivering the oomph to the rear axle by default. However, depending on the road conditions, the system can also send power to the front wheels. The torque distribution also varies on the drive mode selected. For instance, in Comfort and Bentley modes, up to 480Nm of torque goes to the front axle. That number drops to 280Nm in Sport mode, making the Bentley more exciting to drive. And to improve manoeuvrability, the sedan also has electronic all-wheel steering.

The massive steel brakes, spanning 420mm at the front, come with gloss red callipers with Bentley branding. For an extra fee, you can have them and the 22-inch wheels in gloss black. Other styling elements that set the Speed apart include the boot lid spoiler, front bumper splitter, rear diffuser and side skirts made from high gloss carbon fibre. In addition, the Blackline Specification ropes in darkened front and rear light bezels, door handles, wing vents and exhaust outlets. The same treatment has also been given to the Flying B mascot, radiator vanes, matrix grilles, side window surrounds, and lower door and rear bumper blades.

Indoors, the Flying Spur Speed boasts Dinamica Pure upholstery, made from 73 per cent recycled polyester. As for the colour options, there are fifteen to choose from, with Piano Black veneer as standard. However, for no additional cost, you can ditch that veneer for Cut Walnut, Dark Stained Burr Walnut or Dark Fiddleback Eucalyptus.

Bentley expects that about a third of the orders for the Flying Spur Speed will be from the USA and Europe. In the Middle East, the brand says that one in five Flying Spur orders will likely be for the new Speed.
