WTA Cincinnati: Gauff defeats Karolina Muchova in the final to win her first WTA 1000 tournament
Coco Gauff wins Cincinnati final (6-3, 6-4)
This Sunday, on Cincinnati’s center court, the 19-year-old American won her first WTA 1000 tournament. A triumph that confirms her rise to prominence.
Played under a blazing sun, this was not a memorable final. Numerous unforced errors on both sides (16 for Gauff, 35 for Muchova), including 6 double faults for the American and 5 for the Czech. However, the extreme heat on court clearly didn’t help either player. But in the end, the most important thing was that Coco Gauff was crowned champion. 6-3/6-4, it was still a convincing victory, punctuating a fantastic week for her.
The Coco summer
She may have had a great week in Cincinnati, but 19-year-old Coco Gauff is above all enjoying a successful summer. After winning the title in Washington two weeks ago, the American is once again shining on home soil, winning the biggest tournament of her career. In Montreal last week, she still made it all the way to the quarter-finals, where she was eliminated by the future winner Jessica Pegula. Now ranked 6th in the WTA rankings, Gauff is full of confidence as the US Open kicks off in a week’s time.
