WTA Cincinnati: Coco Gauff beats Iga Swiatek to reach WTA 1000 final for the first time in her career

The young American had the last word against the Pole (7-6, 3-6, 6-4).

Today, on the Grandstand court and under the Cincinnati sun, American Coco Gauff achieved one of the greatest feats of her young career. She beat world number 1 Iga Swiatek in a three-set battle, winning 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. With this success, she secures her place in tomorrow’s Cincinnati final.

A day of great firsts for Coco Gauff. As well as becoming the first woman to qualify for tomorrow’s WTA 1000 final in Cincinnati (pending the other semi-final between Muchova and Sabalenka), she accomplished two major feats, both of which she had never achieved before. Firstly, Gauff defeated for the first time the boss of the circuit, Poland’s Iga Swiatek, world no. 1. In view of the recent confrontations between the two players, today’s success for the 19-year-old American is probably a source of immense pride. As a reminder, in the final of the French Open in 2022, and again this year in the quarter-finals of the Parisian major, Swiatek won by a landslide, in two sets. The ratio is now one win for the Atlanta native, seven for the Pole. Cori Gauff then becomes a WTA 1000 finalist for the very first time. Until then, who knows, maybe a first title.
