Would You Buy The Volkswagen Virtus?

It arrives with the same TSI engine options as the Taigun.

After unveiling it in March this year, Volkswagen has now announced the prices of the Virtus. The sedan starts at INR 11.22 lakh and goes up to INR 17.92 lakh. It is built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, which also does duty in the Taigun and two Skodas. Hence, it shares quite a bit with its siblings, including the engines, transmission options and features. But the design is distinctively VW. Here’s the complete price list:

The Virtus is available with two TSI engine options. The 1.0-litre mill puts out 115hp/178Nm, whereas the 1.5-litre motor offers 150hp/250Nm. Buyers can choose between three transmissions – a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed torque converter (automatic) and a 7-speed DSG. Out of the lot, the last one is available exclusively with the larger engine. That’s the same mantra that VW follows with the Taigun as well. As for the mileage, that’s 19.4kmpl for the manual variants, 18.12kmpl for those with the torque converter automatic and 18.67kmpl for the DSG derivative.

Features? The list is quite extensive and should please most out there. It includes an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, ventilated front seats, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, push-button start/stop and an electric sunroof. And it goes on with stuff like wireless mobile charging, automatic climate control, 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, an 8-speaker sound system and a 60:40 split rear seat. The Virtus also packs more than 40 active and passive safety features, like six airbags, Hill Hold Control, Electronic Stability Control, auto-dimming IRVM and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

There are six colours to choose from – Wild Cherry Red, Carbon Steel Grey, Rising Blue Metallic, Curcuma Yellow, Reflex Silver and Candy White. And like other VWs, the Virtus comes with a standard warranty cover of 4 years/1,00,000km.

So, there you have it. The Volkswagen Virtus sums up as an intriguing prospect. It looks great, has multiple powertrain options and a well-rounded list of creature comforts. In India, it will lock horns with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and its step-sibling – the Skoda Slavia. But, can the Virtus worry the Honda City, which has been the segment yardstick for years? I think it has enough in its arsenal to do some damage. Where do you stand?
