Vondrousova beats Jabeur to win the Wimbledon final !

The Czech wins in two sets (6-4, 6-4) in the women’s final.

On center court this afternoon, Marketa Vondrousova made history. She became the first woman to win Wimbledon without being seeded. She did so by beating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, who lost her second consecutive London final.

What a story ! Czech Marketa Vondrousova has been through some pretty tough times in recent years. After reaching the French Open final in 2019, she underwent wrist surgery and returned to the courts the following year. She made a difficult comeback and injuries continued to keep her away from the courts, notably in 2022, when she missed 3/4 of the major tournaments. Before Wimbledon, she was ranked 42nd in the WTA rankings. And this afternoon, she made history and achieved the greatest feat of her career, winning Wimbledon without being seeded (top 32 before the start of a Grand Slam tournament). She got the better of world n°6 Ons Jabeur after two sets of 6-4, 6-4 and 1h20 of play.

And for the Tunisian, she’ll have to wait a little longer for such a moment of happiness. She’s almost beginning to think she’s cursed. With this defeat, Jabeur loses her third final in a major tournament, and her second in a row here at Wimbledon. The native of Ksar Hellal will nevertheless remain in 6th place in the rankings. As for Vondrousova, she will reach the highest ranking of her career on Monday. She will be ranked 10th in the world.
