Volkswagen Golf R “20 years” offers exclusivity and more power

Volkswagen inducts a world first trim feature to celebrate the performance model

Not many cars enjoy a production run of over two decades, let alone a special performance trim boasting the same. Though Volkswagen’s Golf R has completed 20 years of production and to celebrate it, Volkswagen has decided to come up with a limited-edition Golf R “20 Years” anniversary special model.

Limited to a production span of a year, the Golf R “20 Years” gets equipped with more power, better driving acoustics and decorative trim accents in Genuine Carbon, a first by Volkswagen worldwide.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine from the standard Golf R continues to do duty in this anniversary edition but puts out 330hp, a hike of 13hp. A special Emotion Start can be configured to activate an initial engine speed overshoot extending up to 2,500 rpm. Upshifts using paddle shifters in S or S+ gear mode are said to provide ‘noticeable feedback’.

Further performance gains come via the R Performance package, available as standard with the Golf R “20 Years”. This equips the hatchback with R-Performance Torque Vectoring, Vehicle Dynamics Manager and two additional driving modes, Special and Drift.

Completing the performance upgrades are exclusive design highlights comprising 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels and decorative trim elements on the dash pad and the door, finished in Genuine Carbon – a first for the brand. Blue R logos can be seen across the car as well.

Volkswagen will retail the Golf R “20 Years” with prices starting from €59,995 in Germany. The car will be produced in the Wolfsburg factory, also known as the home of Golf. The anniversary model will reach European and American dealerships, not before mid-2022.
