Volkswagen confirms a new California at the end of the year
Based on the Multivan, the fifth generation will adopt plug-in hybrid variants
The friend of families on the move will soon be entering its fifth generation. Carsten Intra, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, confirmed at a press conference that the new California will be presented at the end of the year. Most probably based on the latest Multivan, the van will be technologically up to date, both in terms of technology and equipment.
Design based on the Multivan
The future California will have a front end similar to that of the Multivan, with a horizontal design featuring Matrix LED headlights connected by a backlit strip. The split front windscreen pillars combined with the large glass areas will provide plenty of light in the cabin. A biton paint finish combined with a variety of wheel designs is expected to be offered, as is the case with the Multivan.
The dashboard is based on the Multivan and will feature two screens in a row with a head-up display. The California will feature Amazon’s Alexa voice control including online services and remote updates. On this point, some changes could be made to better adapt to the expectations of California customers.
Plug-in hybrid, a first for the California!
Under the bonnet, the van will receive for the first time a plug-in hybrid engine combining a 1.4 TSI with a small electric motor. The combination produces 218 PS and can travel up to 48 km in electric mode thanks to a 13 kWh battery. Those allergic to electrification can opt for the inexhaustible 2.0 TDI with 150 PS. On the other hand, fans of electric vehicles will have to wait for the ID.Buzz, which will also present a converted van version.
