Dallas, Texas, hosted this year’s Verticon, the world’s largest trade show for the vertical lift aviation industry. Airbus swung into action soon after the three-day event went live with the launch of its new helicopter, the H140. The European manufacturer segments its latest offering under the light twin-engined category. That means it complements the existing light twin that serves emergency medical services, passenger transportation, and private and business aviation markets.
Airbus Helicopters claims the H140 is a 3-tonne class rotorcraft that prioritises performance, economics, and passenger and crew comfort. Among several innovations, the chopper features a design that reduces sound levels, a five-blade bearingless main rotor (introduced on the H145 in 2019), and new engines. Compared to some competitors, the H140 boasts a roomier cabin space, large windows, and clever packaging to accommodate up to six passengers. Moreover, the rear loading access enables the use of varied stretcher systems, including intensive care ones and transport incubators.
Regarding the engines, the H140 features Safran Arrius 2E 700 shp powerplants that provide class-leading payload and range. The engines are managed by a dual-channel FADEC (Full-Authority Digital Engine Control) system. Airbus Helicopters will equip the H140 with Helionix avionic system that also does duty in the H135, H145, H169 and H175 choppers. This system, along with the 4-axis autopilot, helps reduce the pilot’s workload and increase safety.
The H140 is expected to enter service in 2028, further boosting Airbus’ prowess in this helicopter space.
