The famous Grand Slam of Flushing Meadows resumes on this Monday 29 August
The last Grand Slam of the year, crazy atmospheres, in short, it’s another exciting couple of weeks ahead ! From August 29th to September 11th, tennis and nothing but tennis with most of the best in the world. “Most” because, yes, there is a small downside : some big names will be missing: Novak Djokovic has not been authorised to travel across the Atlantic and Alexander Zverev was not yet physically fit. On the American side, Reilly Opelka is the only major absence. However, there will be one big comeback in Flushing, and not the least, that of Rafa Nadal, author of a rather incredible 2022 season so far considering his physical problems (4 titles including the Australian Open and Roland Garros). For defending champion Daniil Medvedev, the stakes in this tournament will be huge.
Last dance for the Williams sisters
On the women’s side, Serena Williams will play her last US Open at home, in front of her home crowd, before bidding farewell to her 27-year career. A career that has seen her win 39 Grand Slam titles (23 in singles, including 4 US Opens, 14 in doubles, 2 in mixed doubles) and achieve the status of best tenniswomen of all time. First round in a night session against Montenegrin Danka Kovinic for Serena.
At the same time, Venus and Serena will play a Grand Slam doubles tournament for the last time. And while the younger sister’s decision to retire is official, the older sister’s future is still unclear as she has yet to make a decision. For her first round, she will face the Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck.
