UFC 292: Sean O’Malley inflicts a spectacular TKO on Aljamain Sterling to become world champion
“Sugar” Sean O’Malley Becomes UFC Bantamweight Champion After Round 2 Victory
On Saturday night, from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, the era of “Sugar” Sean O’Malley truly began. The American fighter defeated Sterling by TKO in round 2 to become the new bantamweight world champion.
It was a main event that lived up to all its promises. Amid a passionate crowd, Aljamain Sterling defended his bantamweight belt against rising star Sean O’Malley. Although he was confident of retaining it, not everything went according to plan. In fact, this confidence probably played a nasty trick on the champion. An attempted attack too short was dodged by “Sugar”, so he didn’t have to wait too long to pay the consequences and take the thunderbolt. O’Malley countered with a devastating right to the jaw. Sent to the ground by this punch, Sterling tries as best he can to resist and stay in the fight. But under the blows distilled by “Sugar”, referee Marc Goddard had no choice but to put an end to the confrontation.
“The Sugar Sean O’Malley era is just beginning “
Now the new UFC bantamweight world champion, O’Malley now has 17 MMA victories to just one defeat. He declared at the end of the fight: “For me, Aljamain is the best bantamweight in history, I’ve never been most nervous before a fight [...] the Sugar Sean O’Malley era is just beginning“. He added that he wanted to defend his title against Marlon Vera next December, in Las Vegas for UFC 296.
The dethroned Aljamain Sterling, meanwhile, suffered his 4th career defeat. Speaking to Joe Rogan, he admitted to having underestimated Sean O’Malley: “Sean is better than I thought“. “I’ve lost in the past, and like every time, I’m going to come back stronger, and become UFC champion again“, he added.
