This V12 Maybach Visits The Brabus Backyard

Among other things, the luxury limousine gets a bigger 12-cylinder powerplant.

The Maybach S 680 is, quite possibly, the ultimate expression of power and panache from the house of Mercedes-Benz. Sure, there are faster and more powerful models available. Still, none come close to offering the level of luxury that a Maybach does. So, what do you do when you want to make the top-notch S-Class more of a handful? Simple. Take it the Brabus finishing school. And the finished product is what you see here – the Brabus 850.

The graceful exterior has been given a dose of carbon fibre. At the front is a Brabus spoiler lip and attachments for the side air intakes. Besides spicing things up, both help reduce lift on the front axle at high speeds and help keep the front brakes and the radiator cool more efficiently. The back end dons a carbon fibre diffuser and two black-enamelled tailpipes of the Brabus exhaust system. Rounding off the outdoor changes are trim elements, including the tuner’s grille frame, in black and 22-inch Monoblock Z wheels finished in high-gloss black. And, of course, the Brabus logos are evidently visible.

Changes indoors complement those on the outside. The seats, door panels and even the Brabus-branded floormats sport a dark grey colour scheme with matching stitching and piping. Carbon fibre? Yes, that can be found steering wheel, the dashboard, the centre console and the doors. Even the Brabus pads on the pedals are made of the same lightweight yet rugged material. Lastly, more than 300 plastic parts like switches, trim panels and air vents have been garnished with a “Shadow Chrome” finish. And if all that isn’t enough, Brabus is ready to provide more customisations per the owner’s taste.

Lastly, the mechanical upgrades. The standard 6.0-litre V12 has been upgraded to 6.3 litres, backed by two Brabus turbochargers. Those changes take the output from 603hp/900Nm to 838hp/1,400Nm (electronically limited to 1,100Nm). As you’d expect, the increase in oomph makes acceleration more exhilarating. The sprint to 100kmph takes 4.1 seconds, four-tenths quicker than the standard Maybach S 680. The top speed is still limited to 250kmph, and the transmission duties are handled by a 9-speed automatic.

The custom exhaust system fitted to the Brabus 850 has electronic valve controls. There’s a “Coming Home” mode, which keeps decibel levels to the minimum possible. And when one wants to make a noise, the “Sport” mode is the way to go. Brabus has even upgraded the air suspension, allowing for a 20mm drop in ride height.

So, there you have it. The Brabus 850 sums up to quite a dish. Don’t you think?
