This Electric Mini Can Go Topless

Dubbed Cooper SE Convertible, it will be built in limited numbers and only for Europe.

Back in the summer of last year, Mini showcased how the convertible version of the Cooper SE would look. People clearly loved it because the British brand has now unveiled the production version of that specimen. The gap between those two events is less than eight months. Mini calls it the Cooper SE Convertible, and it claims the title of the world’s first convertible EV in the small car space. Unfortunately, its production is limited to 999 units and exclusively for Europe.

Okay, over to the specifics. Buyers will have a choice of two colours for the Mini Cooper SE Convertible – Enigmatic Black and White Silver. The car’s door handles, side scuttles, and the surrounds of the front and rear lights are finished in Resolute Bronze. However, the Mini logos and the model lettering are in Piano Black. As for the ‘E’ logo, denoting that it’s a pure-electric Mini, it finds space on the front apron and the rear end. Another highlight is located on the door sills and the side scuttles – the edition number (1 of 999, for example).

The two-tone 17-inch cast alloy wheels look classy and come with a story. They are made of 100 per cent secondary aluminium, while the electricity needed for their manufacturing process is from renewable resources. The idea behind using secondary raw materials and green energy was to reduce CO2 emissions compared to a conventional production process.

Indoors, the Mini Cooper SE Convertible boasts electric (and heated) leather seats, a heated and multifunction steering wheel draped in leather, ambient lighting, Piano Black trim and an all-black theme with yellow accents. The rest of the kit comes from the Cooper SE, including the digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, Active Cruise Control and Mini Driving Assistant.

Propulsion comes from a single electric motor that produces 184hp/270Nm, enough for the convertible to hit 100kmph from a standstill in 8.2 seconds. In addition, the fabric roof can be retracted electrically at speeds of up to 30kmph, while the 32.6kWh battery can deliver a WLTP-certified range of up to 201km.

Mini will manufacture the Cooper SE Convertible alongside its conventionally-powered Mini Convertible in the Netherlands. As for sales, they will commence in April 2023.
