These Puma Sneakers Honour An Iconic Porsche

They celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7.

When it’s about paying homage to something special, the obvious place to start is with a brief history lesson. So let’s!

About A Car.

About half a century ago, Porsche began the development of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7. And to homologate the finished product with Group 4 racing regulations for Special GT cars, Porsche initially built 500 specimens of it. Later the same year, the car debuted at the 1972 Paris Motor Show. The 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was an instant hit, as all 500 units were sold in a few weeks.

So, why tie-up with Puma? Well, there’s an uncanny similarity in the sports company’s history.

About A Shoe.

Ask any apparel expert, and you’ll know how significant the Puma Suede footwear collection is for the sports brand. For many, it defined Puma. When released originally, only 307 pairs were up for grabs. Why 307? That was the competition number of a celebrated Olympian – Tommie Smith.

The Fusion.

To further expand the Porsche x Puma collection, the duo have introduced the Puma x Porsche Suede RS 2.7 Limited Edition. Just 500 pairs (per colourway) will be made, each one with RS 2.7 typeface. Colour options? There are ten of them. Out of the lot, the Orange/Black and Grand Prix White/Black are available exclusively for the Dutch and Japanese markets, respectively. If you want one, they are already available at Porsche’s and Puma’s online stores. Today, they even go on sale at the Porsche Museum Shop. And all those who buy the limited-run footwear will get free entry to the Porsche Museum until the end of 2022.

Some Interesting Facts About The Car

Did you know it was the first 911 to wear the “Carrera” tag? The name came from Porsche’s successful run at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana road race. And we know that any Porsche with an RS tag is focused primarily on racing and rallying. The 2.7? That denoted the size of the engine in litres.

Porsche realised that its customers would want to participate in racing events. Hence, it made the necessary tweaks to make the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 road-legal. And the most distinctive design element of the fastest German production car (of the day) was the rear spoiler – the ducktail.
