The new Project Mondo G is a space-ready G-Wagon with puffy wheels

It is a collaborative project between Mercedes-Benz and Moncler

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon seems to be the signature do-it-all vehicle for the human population. Its inception phase saw it don a military specification for the Sultan of Brunei. The current generation sees it wearing leather and luxury to represent global celebrity icons. And going by Mercedes-Benz chief design officer Gorden Wagener’s vision, the future demands the G-Wagon to be space-ready. Presenting the one-off Project Mondo G.

Developed by Mercedes-Benz and luxury lifestyle brand Moncler, Project Mondo G interprets a car that would participate in a space mission. The Mondo G was unveiled earlier this week at Moncler’s “The Art of Genius” show during London Fashion Week, and it combines the ethos of two of Europe’s biggest brands.

Gorden Wagener said the work showcases “the strong geometry of the G-Class merged with the organic forms of Moncler puffer jackets.” Specifically, the wheels and roof are inspired by the puffer jackets of the skiwear brand. The roof even gets a zipper running across its length. Wagner continued, “The Moncler puffer jacket materials reminded me of spacecraft and satellites, so we wanted to find something that’s really futuristic with spacecraft material and combine it with that old spacecraft of ours, the G.”

The chief designer claims the Project Mondo G is all about contrast, and the shiny puff material wheels and roof perfectly contradict the patina military-spec G body from yesteryear. All that contrasting set of wheels tips this Mondo G’s scales at 2.5 tonnes and 3.4 metres in width.

With the space rover project in the bag, does this mean there won’t be more such unique collaborative designs from Mercedes-Benz? “We will continue,” says Wagener. What crazy idea or brand collaboration can you think of for Mr Wagener? Let us know in the comments below.
