Launched in 2018, the second-generation Mercedes G-Class is about to receive a facelift before handing over to an all-electric third generation. Unsurprisingly, this facelift will not bring any major aesthetic changes. The grille is likely to be slightly revised, with timidly retouched headlights. New colours and new wheels will be included in the catalogue. At the rear, too, the changes will be minimal. On board, Mercedes will take the opportunity to update the G-Class, which is beginning to be overtaken by the competition.
MBUX to the rescue
The 4×4 will benefit from the MBUX infotainment system, which will add a number of functions compared with the outgoing system. The steering wheel could incorporate touch-sensitive buttons, as on the latest E-Class, while the centre console will adopt a simplified design with a new touchpad. As for the exterior, new personnalisation options will be available, including new inserts and upholstery. As for equipment, this will naturally be enhanced from the base version onwards.
In fact, the biggest change is under the bonnet, where the facelifted G-Class will quite simply abandon diesel. From now on, Mercedes will rely entirely on petrol engines, which will be electrified for the first time. However, don’t expect any major hybridization, as 48V micro-hybrid powertrains will be used. As with the current model, an automatic gearbox will be fitted as standard, as will all-wheel drive. The facelifted Mercedes G-Class will be unveiled at the end of the year and will go on sale in 2024.
