The EQS 580 EV Launched In India

It has a dual-motor setup and can travel up to 857km (ARAI) before running out of charge.

Last month, Mercedes-Benz India drove in the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+. That, like the EQC before it, landed on the country’s shores as a direct import. Hence, it has an eye-watering price tag of INR 2.45 crore. If that’s a bit much for you but you want a similarly-sized luxury EV, the German brand has an alternative. It’s called the EQS 580 4MATIC, priced at INR 1.55 crore.

Why does the new variant cost INR 90 lakh less than the AMG variant? Two reasons. One, the EQS 580 isn’t as powerful. And two, it is assembled in India. That second point has a monumental impact on the taxes applicable. Put simply, a car that’s imported as a CBU (Completely Built Unit) attracts a much higher import duty than one brought in a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) form.

With those boring bits out of the way, let’s get back to the Mercedes-EQ EQS 580 4MATIC. It comes with two electric motors, one for each axle. Jointly, they produce 516bhp/855Nm, enough for the 3-tonne EV to complete the 0-100kmph sprint in 4.3 seconds. The top speed is electronically-limited to 210kmph.

The powerplant gets its juices from a 107.8kWh battery, which, if used responsibly, can last for up to 770km (WLTP) or 857km (ARAI) before running out of charge. And when it does, there are multiple charging options available. For instance, it’ll take around 10 hours to charge from 10 to 100 per cent via an 11kW AC charger. Naturally, the wait time drops to 5 hours when using a 22kW feed. However, if you can find a 110kW DC charger, the battery can charge from zero to 80 per cent in 31 minutes. And you can plug the limousine into a charger offering up to 200kW of DC feeds.

Enough math! Moving to the features list, it is, as you’d expect, quite extensive. Some of the highlights include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 17.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch display for the front passenger, 64-colour ambient lighting and a Burmester 3D Sound System. The luxobarge also offers wireless smartphone integration and charger, air suspension, all-wheel steering, a panoramic sunroof and a plethora of assistance and safety systems.

In India, the Mercedes-EQ EQS 580 4MATIC rivals the likes of the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-tron GT. Compared to those, both being sportier in profile, the Mercedes is a massive luxury saloon.
