The all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC is a hybrid-only luxury SUV

It gets redesigned looks and a new ‘off-road’ mode with a ‘transparent bonnet’ feature

With 2.6 million unit sales globally, the GLC model series has become Mercedes-Benz’s best-selling model in the past two years. And now, the German carmaker aims to build upon this stronghold by introducing an all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC. The new second-gen Mercedes-Benz GLC comes with revised looks, more technology, better off-road prowess and an eco-friendly heart to keep it in line with the brand’s climate-neutral mobility goal, “Ambition 2039”.

With carmakers switching to electrification, the new GLC, available only as a hybrid, poses the perfect stepping stone for Mercedes on its path to zero emissions. There are as many as seven powertrain options, including four 48V mild-hybrid units and three plug-in hybrid variants. Only four-cylinder petrol and diesel units are on sale, with power output ranging between 197hp to 269hp. Though 100kms of pure EV range is now being provided in the new GLC plug-in hybrid derivatives to allow zero-emissions daily commutes within the urban setup.

Besides a bigger electrified range, the new GLC itself has grown in length as well by 60mm. The larger proportions aid the GLC’s luggage capacity by registering a 70-litre increase from its predecessor. The boot lid now even comes equipped with an electronic setup as standard making the tailgate operations more convenient at the touch of a button. The new SUV sits 4mm lower to the ground, benefiting aerodynamics and reduced wind noise.

The cabin of the new GLC has been aligned with the latest crop of Mercedes launches. A vertical 11.9-inch floating infotainment touchscreen on the centre console and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster ahead of the driver round off the all-digital approach seen in modern Mercedes cars. This infotainment unit comes equipped with the latest Mercedes MBUX software, a more capable voice assistant and the option for customers to link their smart home system with their GLC for remote monitoring. The comfort factor inside the GLC cabin has also been heightened, thanks to a more advanced seat massaging function covering a larger area and new seat heating options for the rear occupants.

Mercedes has further upped the off-road capabilities of the new GLC. A new ‘off-road’ mode showcases aspects like gradient, inclination, and compass in a visually tangible way on the central screen. However, the new ‘transparent bonnet’ feature that exhibits a virtual view under the front of the vehicle should make off-roading easier for the user. A level control air suspension and rear-wheel steering, both optional extras, can be opted for easier treading on unknown terrains.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLC will find its way to select European showrooms in autumn 2022.
