A Classic car convoy embarks on the East Himalaya Rally

Over a dozen classic cars will venture through hilly terrains around the Himalaya

Car rallies can be of two kinds – one that lets the owner enjoy his/her vehicle and the other that influences them to test the machine’s limit. The 2022 East Himalaya Rally conforms to the latter category as it demands a convoy of classic and vintage cars to tread along a 3200km route through hilly terrain across three countries. The convoy had its flag-off at the eastern city of Kolkata, and team TCI managed to attend the same.

The 2022 East Himalaya Rally, organised by travel firm Destination Rally, will see participants stay on the road for over 25 days. In a bid to make the rally start special for over a dozen classic car owners, the local classic car group called Eastern India Motoring Group (EIMG) welcomed the convoy with a vintage car rally of its own through the streets of Kolkata. The event saw local classic car owners gather at the start line alongside the participants, and local politician Babul Supriyo flagged off the rally.

The classic car convoy comprised the iconic Aston Martin DB6, the Jaguar XK150 – a five times LeMans winner, some Mercedes SLs and an Austin Healey. A couple of Porsche 911s (930-gen) will also be venturing out along with a Volvo Amazon, a pair of BMW adventure bikes and a small group of vintage cars.

The rally organised by Destination Rally will see the convoy commence from the metropolitan city of Kolkata, drive north through the state of West Bengal and breach the Bhutan border. All classic vehicles will touch through prominent Bhutan cities as it commutes further into Eastern Indian states such as Assam. The return journey would see the participants pierce through Bangladesh and make their way to Kolkata.

Destination Rally has conducted a plethora of long-distance rallies in the past. The group has toured multiple classic cars across Burma, India, China, Chile, and Argentina, with distances stretching over 5000kms in some trips. The travel firm has more road trips planned for 2023 and 2024, with the itineraries extending to Canada, Africa and even New Zealand.
