Tag Heuer launches the Carrera Chronograph at LVMH Watch Week in Miami

An iconic chronograph in teal green that pays homage to Tag Heuer’s motor racing heritage.

LVMH Watch Week – Miami, Florida. January 28th – February 1st, 2024.

TAG Heuer – a leading Swiss luxury watch brand – has chosen LVMH Watch Week to launch a teal green version of their Carrera Chronograph with date window at 9 o’clock, referred to as the “iconic DATO layout”. TAG Heuer’s roots go back to 1860, when Edouard Heuer founded Uhrenmanufaktur Heuer AG in St-Imier, Switzerland. TAG Group – short for “Techniques d’Avant Garde” – purchased a majority stake in them in 1985, giving birth to TAG Heuer. Since 1999, TAG Heuer has been part of LVMH. TAG Heuer is based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

LVMH or Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy is a French multinational luxury goods conglomerate, which owns brands in sectors such as wines and spirits, fashion and leather goods, perfumes and cosmetics, watches and jewelry, retail, luxury travel and few others.

In Tag Heuer’s own words:

“To fully grasp the rich history of the iconic Carrera collection and its legendary timepieces, one must embark on a journey through time. The Carrera collection, making its debut in 1963, was originally conceived without a date complication. However, the collection’s evolution took an interesting turn just three years later when a date function was introduced at the 12 o’clock position, giving birth to the first iteration of the Dato design.”

“But the evolution didn’t stop there. In 1968, a significant transformation occurred as the date window relocated to the nine o’clock position. This pivotal moment marked the emergence of the iconic Dato layout, which has since become synonymous with Tag Heuer’s commitment to precision and style.”

The newly launched Carrera Chronograph with date window at 9 o’clock continues this iconic legacy. It is a modern timepiece that evokes vintage vibes.

Design and Dial:

The Carrera Chronograph is a mechanical automatic timepiece. Its functions are hours, minutes, centre seconds, 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock and date window at 9 o’clock – placed on a circular dial. The crown is at 3 o’clock and the chronograph pushers are at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock.

Its dial is teal green and has a circular brushed pattern. On the outer edge of the dial, the curved flange with 60 second and minute scale is also teal green. The 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock is teal green “azuré”.

In Tag Heuer’s own words:

“The choice of teal green is not arbitrary; it pays homage to motorsport history, particularly the vintage green shades of the racing cars during the thrilling era of national color racing from the 20’s to the 60’s. This color selection reflects TAG Heuer’s racing heritage, infusing the Carrera collection with the nostalgia of that golden age of motorsports.”

“Described as a harmonious blend of blue and green, teal green embodies TAG Heuer’s unique vision and historical resonance.”

The hour, minute and centre seconds hand are rhodium plated and polished. The hour and minute hands are coated with white Super-LumiNova®.

The single hour indexes at ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘4’, ‘5’, ‘6’, ‘7’, ‘8’, ’10’, ’11’ and double hour index at ‘12’, are rhodium plated, facetted, polished and applied on the dial. On the top of each index, just below the curved flange, there is a small circular hour marker, each coated in lume.

On the outer edge of the dial, on the curved flange, the 60 second and minute scale is printed in white. The angled date window at 9 o’clock has a rhodium plated border. The date disc is white.

The 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock has a circular snail pattern. ‘10’, ‘20’, and ‘30’ and a small-index marker in place of ‘5’, ‘15’ and ‘25’ are all printed in white. On its outer edge, small-index markers – each denoting a minute – are printed in white.

Between the centre of the dial and the 12 o’clock double hour index, ‘CARRERA’ and the ‘TAG HEUER’ logo are printed in white. Slightly above the 6 o’clock hour index, ‘SWISS’ is printed in white.

Calibre:

The Carrera Chronograph is powered by in-house mechanical automatic chronograph calibre TH20-07. Its functions are hours, minutes, centre seconds, 30-minute chronograph counter and date. It has 33 jewels, beats at a frequency of 28,800 VPH or 4 Hz and has a power reserve of 80 hours.

In Tag Heuer’s own words:

“The watch features an open caseback that showcases TAG Heuer’s in-house movement Heuer 02 listed as TH20-07, with an impressive 80-hour power reserve. Additional refinements, like the bidirectional automatic winding mechanism, enrich this remarkable timepiece. Notable characteristics of the movement include a five-year extended warranty, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to durability and reliability. It also contains a distinctive shield-shaped rotor, a symbol synonymous with TAG Heuer.”

Case and Bracelet:

The Carrera Chronograph’s case is crafted in steel, fine brushed and polished. It has a case diameter of 39mm, a case thickness of 13.86mm, and lug-to-lug distance of 46mm. It has a Glassbox domed sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment. The crown at 3 o’clock is crafted in steel. The two chronograph pushers at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock are crafted in steel, fine brushed and polished. A sapphire caseback, affixed to the case with steel screws, allows one to view the calibre TH20-07. The case has a water resistance of 100 metres.

In the Tag Heuer’s own words:

“The timepiece boasts a domed sapphire Glassbox crystal. It is called “Glassbox” for its domed, curved, crystal glass, paying homage to similarly domed hesalite crystal designs from the 1970’s. Reengineered to have a curve that flows seamlessly over the flange, it runs along the edge of the dial, blending into the case. This innovative design offers an easy reading of the indications on the dial via the front glass.”

The timepiece comes with a black alligator leather strap, and a folding clasp with double safety push buttons – crafted in steel and fine brushed and polished. The TAG Heuer shield is stamped on the clasp.
