German carmaker RUF Automobile has unveiled a new prototype boxer eight engine at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. Known as the “Erprober” (Tester), the engine serves as a development platform and not a production powertrain. Fitted in an experimental CTR3 vehicle, the new 4.8-litre twin-turbo flat-eight engine aims to test technologies that will be used in future RUF models.
What is the specification of the newly designed Boxer 8 engine?
In addition, the prototype engine is a 4.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat-eight designed in-house by RUF. This engine produces more than 986 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque.
This engine is mated to the RUF six-speed manual gearbox and, at present, serves exclusively as a development unit. This engine is not intended for near-term production and will be used primarily to test new engineering solutions.
Why does RUF use modified CTR3 as a test car?
RUF decided to use the modified CTR3 to accommodate the new boxer-eight engine, as it had to lengthen the CTR3 body by 100 mm.
Using the CTR3, the engineers will be able to evaluate the engine’s performance and drivability before putting the technology on board in a future production car.
How would the prototype serve at the Goodwood Festival of Speed?
The Boxer 8 prototype is expected to make its public debut at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The upgraded CTR3 is expected to be part of the Supercar Run twice a day between July 10 and July 12 under the guidance of racing driver Tanner Foust.
During periods when the car is not running for demonstrations,it will be displayed in the Supercar Paddock at the festival.
What sets apart the exterior appearance of the prototype?
Although the prototype is derived from the CTR3, its exterior livery was designed in collaboration with Aloisa Ruf and OPTIMA Batteries. The livery features Blossom Yellow, which references the historical CTR Yellowbird, and graphics resembling the number eight, an allusion to the new engine configuration.
The company states that the graphics were designed to represent the process of engineering development and improvement in visual form, paying homage to RUF’s design traditions.
Availability, prices, and release dates
As we mentioned before, the Boxer 8 is still a prototype and is not offered for sale. It is intended as a research and development platform for technologies that will be integrated into RUF’s future production model. At the moment, the company has not revealed when or on which model the new engine technology will first be released.
