Pre-war Bugattis and a Duesenberg stashed away during WWII comprise RM Sotheby’s Monterey highlight auction lots

The renowned Terence E. Adderley vintage car collection will go under the hammer in August

The revered award-winning vintage car collection of the late Terence E. Adderley is being put up for sale at the upcoming Monterey auctions by RM Sotheby’s. The Terence E. Adderley collection is renowned worldwide among prestigious collectors as it houses exceptional quality and carefully curated models, mainly pre-War-era cars.

The highlight lots include a blue-chip Duesenberg that was stashed away from World War II, pre-war Bugattis, a unique Cord and a Rolls-Royce owned by actress Marlene Dietrich among other notable vintage cars. The Monterey auction is RM Sotheby’s flagship sale for the year and will be conducted between 17–19 August.

1931 Duesenberg Model J Tourster by Derham

No name attracts more ears in the American classics collector community than Duesenberg. The lot on sale is a Tourster model, favoured by the firm’s in-house designer for its low-slung looks and practical, retractable rear windscreen. This particular ’31 Model J-423 enjoys a history of being stashed in a barn under a haystack for the duration of WWII as the original owner was forced to escape Italy quickly. Post the war, the car was recovered by an Italian brigadier general who sold it to an enthusiast from Milan. This owner restored the car to its original glory and kept it for two decades before he sold it to another home, where the Model J spent its next 45 years only to find its way into the Terence E. Adderley collection in 2013. RM Sotheby’s estimates it to attract bids upwards of $ 1.6 million.

1933 Stutz DV-32 Convertible Victoria by Rollston

Not many may be aware of Stutz in the modern age, but the Stutz Motor Car Company was an American producer of high-end sports and luxury cars and was responsible for producing America’s first sports car. The firm introduced various technological innovations with the engines, such as hemispherical combustion chambers and 32 valves per cylinder, lending the DV-32 its name. The lot boasts a coachbuilt body from New York’s Rollston and a list of famed American owners such as William Harrah, Richard Scott, Joseph & Margie Cassini, and Dave Kane. Though, under special care from Stutz enthusiast Andy Simo, it received a Concours-quality restoration which led this model to achieve multiple accolades such as a class award at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2006, Best in Class at Amelia Island in 2007, Best of Show at the Glenmoor Gathering in 2007, and Best in Class at the Meadow Brook Concours in 2009. The ’33 Stutz DV-32 Convertible Victoria spent its last decade in the Adderley collection and now expects to fetch over $1 million.

1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Transformable Phaeton by Hibbard & Darrin

A revered car collection seems incomplete without a vintage Rolls Royce, and the lot on sale has enjoyed Red Carpet fame in its hay day. This ’30 Phantom I was purchased new by film director Josef von Sternberg and Paramount Studios to entice German film star Marlene Dietrich to make her way to Hollywood. When the famed actress arrived in Los Angeles by train, the car is said to have been waiting for her. This Rolls Royce has made a couple of silver screen appearances in the climax of the film Morocco and Tom Cotter’s film ‘The Cobra in the Barn’. The Phantom I features a patented convertible top designed by “Dutch” Darrin and lightweight body panels fashioned from aluminium. The car was acquired by Mr Adderley in 2012 and commands bids of around $375,000.

The remaining highlight lots of the Adderley collection comprise a 1927 Bugatti Type 37A Grand Prix formerly owned and raced by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, a 1931 Cord L-29 Cabriolet that boasts winning records at the Pebble Beach Concours and a 1952 Kurtis Kraft 4000 “Bowes Seal Fast” Special with victories on the tracks of Indianapolis 500 as well as Pebble Beach Concours events.
