Porsche opens its first premium charging station in Germany

These top-of-the-range charging stations will feature ultra-fast charging alongside a relaxation lounge with snacks, drinks and Wi-Fi access

To get to the Tesla Superchargers, you generally have to leave the main roads to find hotels in the middle of the countryside. Ionity, on the other hand, involves stopping off at rest areas, which can sometimes be very crowded. For Porsche customers, this kind of experience borders on the intolerable. That’s why the German brand has launched its own charging network, with the first station opening at Bingen-on-the-Rhine in Germany.

Users will benefit from six 300 kW DC charging points and four 22 kW AC charging points. They will be protected from the elements by a hall incorporating solar panels. There’s nothing really new here, since Fastned’s stations adopt a similar architecture. The big plus is the addition of a building open 24/7 directly adjacent to the charging points. The Porsche Charging Lounge will feature a cosy interior with toilets and a snack and drinks area.

A premium service at a preferential rate

It will be possible to pay by credit card, of course, but also by Apple Pay and Google Pay thanks to the free Wi-Fi integrated into the building. There will also be a rest area where drivers can relax before hitting the road again. And contrary to all expectations, users will benefit from preferential charging rates, with each kilowatt-hour charged at €0.33, exactly the same price charged by Ionity to Porsche customers.

A service reserved for Porsche customers

In terms of access to the stations, Porsche will follow the same model as Tesla, with an entrance reserved exclusively for its customers. Those will be identified by their number plate or the Porsche app. For the time being, there is no risk of traffic jams at these stations, since the Taycan is the only electric Porsche. But that’s likely to change with the arrival of the Macan later this year, followed by the 718 in 2025. This is why Porsche intends to build other Porsche Charging Lounges in Germany, as well as in Austria and Switzerland.
