Panerai introduces the impressive new Submersible GMT PAM01495

A tool watch with a skeletonised calibre and a GMT function (among other features) that its owner can take up to 500 metres underwater.

What is the new Panerai Submersible GMT PAM01495?

The Submersible GMT PAM01495 is a big bold tool watch featuring “advanced technical features,” a result of the brand’s R&D department’s persistent efforts.

What are its dial features?

Image: The hue of the sandblasted titanium contrasts well with the overall black, blue, orange and white accents. The Super-LumiNova on the hands and hour-markers have a green glow, except for the minutes hand and large dot (in lieu of 60) on the graduated bezel that have a blue glow. Notice the patented polarised date at 3 o’clock. The crown protecting bridge is an unmistakable part of the brand’s design identity.

It does not have a conventional dial. Rather, a skeletonised dial with a “net-style” structure showcases its skeletonised movement. Hands and hour-markers are coated with Super-LumiNova.

“Unlike conventional date discs, which are opaque and obscure the mechanics underneath, Panerai’s polarised date remains virtually invisible across the movement, revealing the date exclusively through the aperture at 3 o’clock. This solution preserves full visibility of the architecture while retaining key information to be displayed.”

What material is its case made from?

The case is made from sandblasted Grade 5 titanium DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering). It measures 47 mm (diameter). Its unidirectional anti-clockwise rotating bezel is made from titanium and features a matte blue ceramic disc. Dial side and caseback feature sapphire crystals. Water resistance up to 50 bar or approximately 500 metres.

The watch comes with a blue rubber caoutchouc (natural rubber) strap fitted with a trapezoidal buckle made from sandblasted titanium. An additional bi-material (blue rubber and black textile) strap is also provided.

Is it powered by an automatic movement?

Image: Titanium caseback. The off-centred micro-rotor is made from tungsten. Incorporating a micro-rotor enables the movement to be thinner. Notice the power reserve indicator. The downward pointing arrow (also coated with Super-LumiNova, a thoughtful touch) indicated time remaining; in the image 2 days.

Yes. It is powered by calibre P.4001/S, an automatic movement that drives the central hours and minutes, small seconds at 9 o’clock, polarised date at 3 o’clock, GMT function via a central hand with a corresponding AM / PM indicator at 9 o’clock, power reserve indicator (reverse side) and a seconds reset function (seconds hand returns to zero once crown is pulled out). It measures 13 ¾ lignes (approximately 31 mm diameter) * 7.36 mm (thickness), comprises 341 parts and 31 jewels and beats at a modern rate of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph. Its power reserve of 3 days or 72 hours is provided via two barrels. The movement features an KIF Parechoc® anti-shock device.

“A distinctive grid design further defines the P.4001/S, serving as a direct nod to Panerai’s maritime legacy. This pattern, inspired by the robust military nets that historically secured vessels in harbour’s, sees its structure reinterpreted within the calibre’s skeletonised architecture. The result is a design that not only reveals the intricate mechanics within but also subtly honours the ingenuity and historical significance of these essential maritime solutions.”

What do we think?

Image: A handsome watch. Most owners will wear this at sea level.

Panerai’s watches have an extremely strong and identifiable design identity. The Submersible GMT is every bit a Panerai, yet one whose horological details might delight even those WIS (watch idiot savant) who would seldom be able to carry off a watch this big and bold. Its skeletonised dial and calibre, GMT function, polarized date, seconds reset functions all housed in a case crafted from advanced materials showcase the Italian brand’s horological muscle.
