Novak Djokovic dominates Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final to win his 24th Grand Slam title

The Serb wins the US Open after beating Medvedev in three sets (6-3, 7-6, 6-3)

On Sunday night in New York, Novak Djokovic made further history on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court. At the end of a 3:15 battle, the Serb triumphed over Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in three sets, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3, to win the 2023 US Open. At the same time, he wins his 24th Grand Slam title.

Novak Djokovic is immortal. At the age of 36, the Serb delivers yet another exceptional Grand Slam performance. Tonight, he beat world No.3 Daniil Medvedev in three sets, in a hard-fought battle, to claim his 24th major tournament crown. His 4th, here at Flushing Meadows, after 2011, 2015 and 2018. With this latest title, he surpasses the record set by Serena Williams in the ladies’ category (23) and equals that of Margaret Smith Court.

Unlike in 2021, when he missed out on his final against the same Daniil Medvedev, this year Djokovic is perfectly in his element. The few mistakes Medvedev made (especially on serve, with double faults) were quickly punished by a Serb playing to perfection. The new world n°1 breaks from the outset. He holds on to his lead until he wins the first set. The balance of power became increasingly balanced in the second set, and Medvedev began to gain a physical advantage. On his opponent’s serve, however, the Russian had nothing to get his teeth into, and when he had a break point at 4-3, and even a set point at 5-4 in his favor, he failed to capitalize. A crazy set that lasted over an hour and ended in a tiebreak, in the Djoker’s favor. This was undoubtedly the turning point of the match, as Medvedev seemed to be the least physically affected and was now well into his match. In the third set, the Serb quickly took the lead. Medvedev still managed to break, and hope was restored. But Djokovic is merciless. The Russian leads 30-0, but a mistake reverses the course of play and the Serb breaks again. A lead he held until Medvedev’s final unforced error, to give himself the right to celebrate in the middle of Arthur Ashe Court.

Before handing over the trophy, Djoko paid tribute to basketball legend Kobe Bryant with the symbolic number 24.
