New X5 And X6 Get Their M Versions

Both pack a 4.4-litre V8 backed by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

After unveiling the refreshed X5 and X6 earlier this month, BMW has now taken the wraps off their M versions. So yes, say hello to the new X5 M and X6 M. The duo will be exclusively available in Competition form, making the decision-making process faster for buyers. Besides boasting design tweaks, both come with BMW’s latest iDrive control and the beautiful curved display, backed by the latest operating system. In addition, the new X5 M and X6 M jointly become BMW’s first high-performance M models to pack mild-hybrid tech.

The new X5 M and the X6 M get their kick from an updated 4.4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8, while an even slicker 8-speed automatic handles transmission duties and feeds power to all four wheels. With 625hp/750Nm on tap, both can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 3.9 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250kmph but can be upped to 290kmph with the optional M Driver’s package. And if you haven’t worked it out already, the X6 M is quicker to reach 200kmph and beyond because of its marginally more aerodynamic silhouette.

Integrated inside the gearbox’s housing is a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. It aids the internal combustion engine with an additional 12hp/200Nm. And it also helps shut and start the engine in a stop-start situation. In addition, the new X5 M and the X6 M also pack an M Sport exhaust, adaptive M suspension Professional and an Active M Differential, which offers up to 100 per cent rear-biased power delivery.

Coming to the design, both feature slimmer headlights and a reworked grille. As expected, the bumpers are more aggressive and complemented with blacked-out elements. M light-alloy wheels in Jet Black, 21-inch at the front and 22-inch at the rear, come as standard. The larger wheels team up with fatter rubber – 315/30 in profile. At the back is an unmissable diffuser, accompanied by four 100mm tailpipes finished in black chrome.

The most noticeable change inside the cabin comes from the introduction of the BMW Curved Display. It’s a single unit encompassing a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Apart from that, there’s a new 15-colour ambient light bar and gear selector. BMW has also included new colour options for the upholstery and trim.

As you’d expect, the duo are brimmed with features. The list includes 2.5-zone automatic climate control, power adjustment for the steering and the seats, a Harman Kardon sound system, wireless mobile charging and Adaptive matrix LED headlamps. And yes, the safety kit and the list of driver assistance systems are extensive. And those willing to spec up their X5 M or the X6 M can find loads of stuff in the options list.

BMW will produce the new X5 M and the X6 M at the same facility in Spartanburg, USA, where it also manufactures other X models, including the X3 M, X4 M and the XM.
