Mercedes plans to make a small electric G-Class

The GLG will arrive in 2026 with both electric and internal combustion engines

The current Mercedes G-Class dates from 2018. Despite its advanced age, it continues to be a commercial success thanks to its atypical style, which is the opposite of what is available on the market. While a third electric generation is already in the works, Mercedes is also thinking of producing a small G-Class. More compact and above all more affordable, the little brother could adopt the features of the Ener-G-Force concept from 2012.

The vehicle would then take the square lines of the G-Class and add a little more curvature for a more modern look. As for the name, the little G-Class would be called GLG to be consistent with the current Mercedes line-up. However, this does not mean that it will fall between the GLE and the GLS in terms of size. The GLG is expected to be around 4.60m while the G-Class is over 4.80m.

In terms of technology, the GLG will be based on the future MMA platform for compact models. The vehicle will therefore naturally have more limited off-road capabilities than the G-Class, which has more suitable underpinnings for the task. The approach and departure angles and especially the ground clearance will therefore be less good than on the G-Class. Under the bonnet, the GLG will have both electric and internal combustion variants. The Mercedes GLG will be presented in 2026.
