Meet The Most Powerful S-Class Ever

The F1 tech ropes in a hybrid powerplant with 802hp and over 30km of all-electric range.

What you see here is called the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance. Those aware of the brand’s naming idiosyncrasies would have figured out the connection with hybrid F1 technology. Another giveaway is that it is the range-topping performance version. But here’s the main highlight – the S 63 E Performance is the most-powerful S-Class ever.

The propulsion comes from the combination of a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 and a rear-axle-mounted electric motor. Mercedes-AMG claims a total system output of 802hp/1,430Nm. Insane! In tune with a slick 9-speed dual-clutch transmission for the V8, a two-speed gearbox for the electric motor and the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive, the S 63 E Performance can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 3.3 seconds and reach 290kmph, with the optional AMG Driver’s package.

The electric motor provides a continuous power of 94hp. However, it can offer 188hp of peak output for about 10 seconds. It gets its juices from a 13.1kWh battery, which can be replenished using a 3.7kW AC charger. If used responsibly, the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance can travel up to 33km on electric power alone. Four-stage power recuperation, seven AMG driving modes, an active roll stabilisation system, rear-axle steering, AMG Ride Control+ suspension and an electronic limited-slip differential are part of the standard kit.

Yes, the looks have been tweaked too. The Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance becomes the first-ever S-Class derivative to boast the AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical louvres and a large three-pointed star. Apart from that, the front apron reveals large side air inlets and functional air curtains. The limousine also rides on 21-inch AMG forged wheels, while AMG-specific side sill panels grab attention as well. The rear end features two trapezoidal tailpipes and a functional and unmissable diffuser.

Changes have been made to the interior as well. The seats, for instance, feature the AMG upholstery layout and logos on the headrests. The MBUX infotainment system has been tweaked as well, with various AMG- and hybrid-specific displays and functions. Some also extend to the optional head-up display. The rest of the package remains mostly the same, meaning a plethora of creature comforts, safety features and driver assistance systems.

The Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance takes the game a notch higher for modern-day luxury limousines. How do you like it?
