MB&F unveils two spectacular new limited-edition watches

The LM Perpetual Longhorn and LM Sequential Flyback Longhorn begin the brand’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Both are limited to 20 pieces each.

MB&F has unveiled two spectacular new versions of its Legacy Machine (LM) Perpetual and LM Sequential Flyback to begin celebrating their 20th anniversary which falls in 2025. The LM Perpetual Longhorn and LM Sequential Flyback Longhorn are limited to 20 pieces each.

MB&F

MB&F was founded by Maximilian (Max) Büsser in 2005. His resume includes time spent at Jaeger-LeCoultre (JLC) and Managing Director at Harry Winston Timepieces. Max resigned from the latter to found MB&F or Maximilian Büsser & Friends.

MB&F’s “resolutely unconventional” Horological Machines (HM) and “historically inspired” Legacy Machines (LM) took the horological world by storm. Categories such as Performance Art and Co-creations came later. In an industry that was (and still is) shrouded in secrecy, Max brought in transparency, hence the “Friends” in the name. Every individual or company – be it an artist, watchmaker, designer, and manufacturer in the horological ecosystem (for example case, hands, components, straps) – who work on an MB&F creation is given credit for that creation.

Key Features

Both watches feature a stainless steel case, rhodium-plated base plate, glossy black lacquer dials, blued hands, and longer lugs, hence the “Longhorn” in the name.

Left: Classic lugs. Right: Longer lugs or Longhorn.

The engine or movement of both watches were designed by Stephen McDonnell, a Northern Irish watchmaker, who studied Theology at Oxford University and watchmaking at WOSTEP in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He is among the “Friends” of MB&F.

LM Perpetual Longhorn

Image: LM Perpetual Longhorn. Among the most impressive perpetual calendars in the world.

Stephen McDonnell rethought the “entire mechanical basis” of the perpetual calendar complication. Historically perpetual calendars have used 31 days as a default, and then decide whether the months have 30 days, or 28 or 29 days in the case of February and Leap Year. The LM Perpetual Engine uses 28 days as a default.

Dial and Functions

Image: There are perpetual calendars, and then there are perpetual calendars, and then there is the LM Perpetual. Longhorn version looks gorgeous.

All subdials feature glossy black lacquer with white markings.

All hands are blued.

Calibre or Engine

Image: Haute horology at the highest level. Beautifully finished calibre.

Powered by a manual winding “fully integrated perpetual calendar developed for MB&F by Stephen McDonnell, featuring dial-side complication and mechanical processor system architecture with inbuilt safety mechanism.” The movement used in the LM Perpetual Longhorn is the same one used in other versions of the LM Perpetual and the LM EVO Perpetual.

Manual winding calibre with two mainspring barrels.

Frequency: 18,000 vph or 2.5 Hz. Power reserve: 72 hours.

It features a “bespoke 14mm balance wheel with traditional regulating screws visible on top of the movement.”

It is an extremely well-finished calibre, “throughout respecting 19th century style.” It features “internal bevel angles highlighting hand craft, polished bevels, Geneva waves; hand-made engravings.”

Case and Strap

Image: Case and dial details contrast well with strap.

Case is made from stainless steel.

Longer lugs than the standard model, hence the name “Longhorn.”

LM Sequential Flyback Longhorn

Image: LM Sequential Flyback Longhorn. Among the most impressive flyback chronographs in the world.

The LM Sequential Evo, launched prior to the LM Sequential Flyback, was a groundbreaking dual chronograph. It both rectified the innate flaws of a conventional chronograph design and offered several timing modes – independent, split-second, cumulative and lap-timer, because of its Twinverter binary switch. It won the GPHG’s “Aiguille d’Or” in 2022, among the most prestigious awards in watchmaking.

Both Stephen McDonnell and the MB&F team were not entirely content with the LM Sequential EVO, as they wanted to add a flyback function. In complete secrecy, they began work and testing on this more than two years ago. Their efforts paid off and the LM Sequential Flyback Platinum was unveiled. The flyback function adds to its present timing modes, commonly associated with motor racing. It also catapults the LM Sequential Flyback Platinum “into the world of aviation.”

Dial and Functions

Image: Don’t call this a watch. Looks amazing.

Rhodium-plated base plate.

Hours and minutes displayed on subdial at 6 o’clock. In order to provide a greater 3-dimensional effect and legibility for the wearer, the subdial has been tilted forward using conical gears.

Left chronograph: Large seconds subdial at 9 o’clock and smaller minutes subdial at 11 o’clock. Start/stop pusher at 10 o’clock and reset/flyback at pusher at 8 o’clock.

Right chronograph: Large seconds subdial at 3 o’clock and smaller minutes subdial at 1 o’clock. Start/stop pusher at 2 o’clock and reset/flyback at 4 o’clock.

All subdials feature glossy black lacquer with white markings.

All hands are blued.

Twinverter pusher at 9 o’clock.

Both chronographs feature a flyback function.

Power reserve indicator is located on the back, near the 8 o’clock pusher.

Calibre or Engine

Image: I could stare at this calibre all day long.

Movement finishing is performed at an exceptionally high level. It includes “internal bevel highlighting handcraft; polished bevels; Geneva waves; hand-made engravings.”

Case and Strap

Case diameter: 44 mm. Thickness: 18.20 mm.

Components: 88.

Both dial and caseback have a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides.

Screw down crown at 3 o’clock.

Our Thoughts

I am left speechless every time I write about an MB&F creation. Max and his team and “Friends” are responsible for some of the most groundbreaking mechanical watchmaking in recent history.

Left: LM Sequential Flyback Longhorn. Right: LM Perpetual Longhorn. We should be grateful these two creations exist, along with everything else from MB&F.

Both the LM Perpetual Longhorn and LM Sequential Flyback Longhorn are a sexy take on two incredible horological creations. The LM Perpetual is among the most impressive perpetual calendars in the world, whereas the LM Sequential Flyback is among the most impressive flyback chronographs in the world. Both highlight elite watchmaking at the highest level.

As MB&F celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, we cannot wait to see what else they have in store. We wish them all the best as they move forward.
