What are the M.A.D.2 R&B and M.A.D.2 REDemption?
The R&B, short for Red and Black (top left) and REDemption (top right) are the latest M.A.D.2 editions, a sub brand of MB&F. Launched last year, it succeeded the M.A.D.1 and M.A.D.1S. Like all MB&F and M.A.D. creations, the M.A.D.2 is the creative work of Eric Giroud, the renowned designer and one of the Friends of MB&F.
The R&B, “a clear nod to the music genre that has always been part of club life.” was available through the brand’s typical raffle system, held during 14th – 20th April.
The REDemption “is reserved exclusively for loyal but unlucky (until now) fans of the brand who have participated in at least four previous raffles… without ever winning. Those persistent fans will be contacted directly by the M.A.D. Editions team and will NOT need to go through a raffle for the M.A.D.2 REDemption: if they wish to acquire the piece, they have direct access to it.”

What are their dial features?
R&B: Stealth midnight black dial with red hour and minute discs.
REDemption: Bright red dial with black hour and minute discs.

What are their case and strap features?
The cases of both editions are made from stainless steel 316L. It measures 42 mm (diameter) * 12.3 mm (thickness). Dial side sapphire crystal is coated with antireflective coating on both sides; caseback sapphire crystal is coated with antireflective coating on the inside. Water resistant up to 30 metres / 3 ATM / 90 feet. Both editions are delivered with a black leather strap with a pin buckle made from stainless steel.
Are they powered by an automatic movement?
Yes. They are powered by a movement that features a Swiss Made Manufacture La Joux-Perret calibre G101 base and a bi-directional jumping hour and trailing minutes module developed by MB&F. Its measures 25.6 mm or 11 ½ lignes (case fitting diameter) * 4.45 mm height. It comprises 24 jewels, beats at a frequency of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph and has a power reserve of 64 hours.
What do we think?
I had the chance to try the M.A.D.2 Green edition during Dubai Watch Week last November; my boss owns one. It caught the attention of a few brand CEOs during our press appointments and Redbar UAE events, the latter hosted by us. I saw something first-hand; that the CEOs of prestigious watch brands, for whom complications and grand complications are a way of life, were mesmerised by the M.A.D.2, a creative watch that is quite affordable (yet not so easily obtainable). No surprises then that the M.A.D.2 Green won the “Petite Aiguille” Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) awards ceremony held in November last year.
I love both the R&B and REDemption editions. My personal favourite is the REDemption. With these two new editions, Max Büsser and his Team continue to keep horology creative and exciting. I eagerly look forward to what’s next from them.
