Jaeger-LeCoultre unveils a new version of the Master Control Calendar

This vintage-inspired model features a two-tone and grained sector dial. It is limited to 500 pieces.

Jaeger-LeCoultre (JLC) has introduced the Master Control Calendar with a new two-tone and grained sector dial. It features a triple or complete calendar complication with a moon phase display housed in a stainless steel case. It joins the model’s lineup – which includes versions in stainless steel and pink gold.

“The classical triple calendar complication – also known as a complete calendar – shows the day, date, month, and moon-phases, with the days and months in the upper half of the dial, the moon-phase in the lower part and the dates marked around the periphery, indicated by a hand.”

Key Features

Functions and Operations

Hours and minutes. Small seconds. Complete calendar functions of day, date, and month. Moon phase display.

Crown at 3 o’clock to wind and set the time. Corrector at 2 o’clock to set the month. Corrector at 4 o’clock to set the date. Corrector at 8 o’clock to set the moon phase display.

Unlike an annual calendar (does not account for leap years and needs to be adjusted once a year), and a perpetual calendar (accounts for leap years and does not need to be adjusted) – a complete calendar needs to be adjusted five times a year – for months not ending in 31.

Dial

Image: The red accents contrast well with the dial. The hour and minute hands are polished on one side and brushed on the other. Every month between the 15th and 16th, the date hand jumps the distance that separates the two dates, so the moon phase display is never concealed. This is enabled by the date hand’s rapid-gliding feature indicated by the red arrows.

Two-tone and grained sector dial. Faceted dauphine-shaped hour and minute hands and dots on the minute track are coated with Super-LumiNova.

“The two-tone effect of the new grained dial creates a visually compelling and highly legible version of this classical layout, with indications divided into distinct sections defined by alternating shades of light and dark grey. In the lighter-toned centre, the day and month windows are positioned at the top, with black decal indications on white discs. In the lower part of the central area, the moon phase display is contained within the small seconds sub-dial. Set against a blue sky dotted with stars, the polished moon subtly reflects the dark grey hue of the ring displaying the hours. Outside the hour circle, the minutes chapter ring is light grey, while the outermost circle displays the date against a dark grey background. The contrast between the light and dark greys is amplified by the way the grained texture of the dial absorbs and reflects the light differently, according to the shade of grey.”

Movement

Image: The gorgeous two-tone grained sector dial meets the Calibre 866, an automatic movement that has been developed, manufactured, and assembled at JLC.

Our Thoughts

Image: Who does not love sector dials? Old world 1940’s vibes in a modern watch. The bezel and top of the lugs are polished, and case sides are brushed.

Triple or complete calendar watches are rare. Vacheron Constantin has a handful in its catalogue; part of their Traditionnelle and Fiftysix collections. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Control Calendar with its new dial is an attractive watch – one that evokes vintage vibes. Combined with its contemporary case size and manufacture movement – (JLC is after all The Watchmaker of Watchmakers™) – it is through and through a modern watch. For collectors seeking a vintage-inspired watch at an accessible price (CHF 13,900 is a steal here), this new model promises to be a worthwhile addition to their collections.
