The Golden Ratio and ’30 Sunsets’
The Golden Ratio or divine proportion is a mathematical principle expressed as 1 / 1.6181 and is at the core of the collaboration between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Abdalla Almulla. Ancient Greek mathematicians discovered the Golden Ratio, and it has been “revered by artists, architects, and philosophers for centuries.” It forms the basis of notable works of art and architecture. The design of Jaeger Le-Coultre’s iconic Reverso is based on the principles of the Golden Ratio.
In accordance with Ramadan, Abdalla Almulla has applied the principles of the Golden Ratio to ’30 Sunsets’, his art piece that is based on the traditions of the 30-day month and the ritual of observing a fast from sunrise to sunset. ’30 Sunsets’ “embodies the anatomy of sunsets during the holy month” of Ramadan.
– It is made from oak wood and has “gradient sunset colours”.
– It combines both design and art.
– Its repeated volume movement and scaling creates a “sense of fluidity,” like the passage of time.
– It inspires harmony and balance – both visually pleasing and intriguing – because of being inspired by the Golden Ratio.
In Abdalla Almulla’s own words:
“As an architect deeply immersed in the realm of design and cultural expression, my collaboration with Jaeger-LeCoultre for Ramadan has been a journey inspired by the profound symbolism of time and the exquisite beauty of tradition. 30 Sunsets is a testament to this journey, drawing inspiration from the beauty of 30 days of Ramadan sunsets and the timeless elegance of the Golden Ratio. It serves as a visual representation of the intersection of geometry and tradition, with each of its 30 surfaces methodically painted to reflect the colours of a sunset during this sacred month. It is a profound honour to contribute to this collaboration, which pays homage to the art of timekeeping and the enduring legacy of Jaeger-LeCoultre and I look forward to witnessing this curated masterpiece come to life, resonating deeply with the soul of the observer.”
During the Holy Month of Ramadan, from March 20 to April 7, guests are welcome to visit Jaeger-LeCoultre’s boutique at The Dubai Mall to experience the ’30 Sunsets’ art piece.
