HUAWEI MatePad 12 X: PaperMatte Upgrade and New M‑Pencil Pro for the Better

The larger real estate and the new M-Pencil Pro make the MatePad 12 X more comfortable for writing, scribbling and performing light tasks.

Overview

Huawei’s PaperMatte Display has improved the tablet experience with a paper-like, anti-glare surface that can replace books, notepads, canvases, and even some PCs. The new HUAWEI MatePad 12 X features an upgraded PaperMatte Display and is the first tablet to support the latest M-Pencil Pro stylus. Beyond hardware, it offers a versatile software ecosystem including a PC-level office suite, the GoPaint app for digital artists, and Wondershare Filmora for video creation.

Ultra-clear PaperMatte Display

In 2025, the HUAWEI MatePad 12 X PaperMatte Edition debuts with an ultra-clear PaperMatte Display using nanoscale anti-glare etching. Unlike glossy screens, it provides better eye comfort and a paper-like writing experience.

Many anti-glare displays suffer from mottled light patterns called sparkles due to the microscopic textures of the AG layer. The upgraded PaperMatte screen on the MatePad 12 X uses advanced nanoscale etching technology to produce a smoother surface, reducing sparkle by 50%. This results in a more transparent PaperMatte display that offers improved eye comfort and enhanced clarity.

Data from the Human Factors and Intelligent Interaction Research Centre of the China National Institute of Standardisation shows that tablets with PaperMatte Display have an eye strain index 34% lower than the previous generation. Additionally, the new PaperMatte Display has earned the SGS Low Visual Fatigue Premium Performance 2.1 Certification.

New HUAWEI M-Pencil Pro: A Stylus with a Twist

The HUAWEI MatePad 12 X offers a smoother creation and interaction experience when paired with the new HUAWEI M-Pencil Pro stylus. This stylus is Huawei’s most advanced model yet, providing users with greater precision and flexibility for writing and artistic work. Its intuitive pinch gesture enhances interaction, while the innovative rotate gesture facilitates a more natural and fluid writing and painting process. The stylus is not included by default and must be bought separately.

Pinching the stylus opens an in-app radial menu offering quick access to brushes, colour palettes, and other tools. It also includes a handy button that takes you directly to the HUAWEI Notes app, as well as a rotate gesture that creates realistic brushstrokes in the GoPaint app. The stylus comes with three specialised tips tailored for writing, small-font writing, and painting, each carefully designed to deliver precise control for different tasks.

Capture Notes or Scribble About

Pressing the quick button on the M-Pencil Pro opens the HUAWEI Notes app, highlighting the benefits of the new stylus. Pinching the stylus accesses a radial shortcut menu for switching shapes, colours, or materials. The Notes app has also become smarter with AI handwriting enhancement, a new resource centre, and new brushes.

The GoPaint app is optimised for the M-Pencil Pro, allowing easy access to the radial menu for changing shapes, colours, and tools with a pinch, and switching instantly between brush and eraser with a double-tap. The M-Pencil Pro introduces the innovative rotate gesture, enabling a more realistic creative experience by allowing users to rotate and manipulate strokes, mimicking traditional brush techniques.

The combination of the PaperMatte Display and M-Pencil Pro creates a digital environment that resembles paper, with its tactile, glare-free surface offering an authentic drawing experience. This suggests that perhaps the solution to digital fatigue isn’t reducing technology, but rather making it feel more natural.

Standout Look and Feel

On the design front, the tablet features a unibody build with a fade-resistant, eco-friendly anodised rear cover. Although made of metal, the back has a warm, smooth feel, thanks to a durable water-based coating. This coating, embedded with natural mica powder, imparts a subtle shimmer to the surface. Such finishes are typically found on luxury cars or premium cosmetics. The MatePad 12 X comes in two colours: Greenery and White, both providing a fresh, creamy look.

Productivity that Matches PCs

The MatePad 12 X is equipped for light office work, featuring a full PC-like WPS Office suite, a detachable smart keyboard, and multitasking capabilities. Unlike typical mobile office apps, the WPS suite on the MatePad provides functional enhancements and an interface similar to its desktop version. Spreadsheets, presentations, and formulas look and function almost identically to their desktop versions, making it easy to switch between PC and tablet for efficient productivity.

When used with the Smart Magnetic Keyboard, the tablet transforms into a laptop-like device, supporting external mouse input for precise control and a familiar workflow. The keyboard utilises NearLink technology for a stable, fast connection and reduced typing delay, featuring shortcut keys for streamlined task completion. Split-screen and multi-window features enable users to view documents, spreadsheets, and chats simultaneously, making the tablet a versatile and portable workstation.
