Ferrari 499P Modificata honours the brand’s triumphant return at the Le Mans podium
It is based on the LeMans-winning race car and offered only to exclusive customers
While several automakers gift themselves a unique limited-production car to commemorate crucial anniversary milestones, Ferrari has unveiled a special limited-series track car called the 499P Modificata to honour the company’s historic return to the top class of endurance racing.
Unlike many other automakers, Ferrari enjoys a rich motorsport heritage. This year’s centenary edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race further witnessed Ferrari make a triumphant return to the highest stand of the podium with its 499P race car – a feat that hadn’t been achieved since 1965. To commemorate this and the brand’s glorious history in endurance racing, Ferrari built the 499P Modificata based on its triumphant LeMans 499P race car for an exclusive line of clientele for non-competitive track use, set to be organised by Ferrari itself under its new Sport Prototipi Clienti programme.
The 499P Modificata marks the beginning of a new approach adopted by Ferrari where the carmaker developed a track-only model directly from a racing car instead of the traditional production model route. Hence the car retains the majority of its exterior aesthetics and single-seater cabin design as the LeMans racer. However, the non-compulsion to comply with FIA’s WEC sporting and technical parameters has allowed Ferrari to make alterations to this customer-spec race car.
For instance, the 499P Modificata enjoys four-wheel drive even at lower speeds, an extra 160hp “Push to Pass” boost function available for a limited time similar to F1’s KERS, tyres developed by Pirelli exclusively for the Modificata, and a complete recalibration of the suspension set-up and engine mappings that offer a more predictable drive from the car.
The powertrain on the 499P Modificata comprises a hybrid setup of a mid-mounted V6 engine and a 268hp electric motor with a differential to produce a combined output of 858hp. While the GT race cars have their engines mounted on the sub-frame, the 499P Modificata’s engine gets structurally integrated into the frame.
Commencing 2024, the prancing horse brand’s Corse Clienti department will organise the “Sport Prototipi Clienti” programme where all 499P Modificata owners can enjoy dedicated track events with technical and logistical assistance being provided from Ferrari directly.
