Chevrolet unveils the new 2024 Silverado HD pickup

The new pickup features a screen heavy cabin and a 10-speed gearbox as standard

Chevrolet announces a new 2024 update for its revered heavy-duty pickup nameplate, the Silverado HD. Instead of mere cosmetic enhancements, the American carmaker introduces upgrades to the powertrain, cabin layout and infotainment and, most importantly, trailering technology in the new 2024 Silverado HD.

The new Silverado HD will now have the proven Allison 10-speed automatic transmission as standard across its lineup, a first in the Silverado lineage. It will replace the previous six-speed automatic to offer smaller steps between gears. This allows the engine to hold closer to its peak power for longer periods and aids the new Silverado’s towing capabilities in every gear. The new standard gearbox gets mated to a 6.6-litre V8 delivering 401hp and 629Nm of torque. The 2024 Silverado’s gross combined weight rating also shows an increase to 11,793kg, up from 10,886kg.

The heavy-duty lineup can be had in multiple configurations ranging between 2500HD and 3500HD models in Regular Cab, Double Cab and Crew Cab iterations. A dual-rear-wheel setup on the 3500HD is also on offer that boasts a 16,329kg trailering capacity, the highest in the lineup. Work Truck, LT and LTZ are the available trim levels.

The new Silverado benefits from a redesigned front end with a new grille. The new fascia, inspired by the Silverado 1500, gets flanked by C-shaped LED headlights featuring dual-projector technology and an animated sequence that lights up upon turning the pickup on and off.

Chevrolet has attempted to extract more convenience from the Silverado’s Durabed cargo box in the 2024 iteration. The new version gets an 83.5 cubic feet cargo capacity, BedSteps, a Multi-Flex six-position tailgate that can be operated electronically and a 220-volt power outlet on offer.

The LT and LTZ trim level cabin will boast an all-new instrument panel and a redesigned passenger layout. Dominating the dashboard is a 13.4-inch-diagonal infotainment display coupled with a 12.3-inch-diagonal digital instrument cluster with the former angled towards the driver and featuring graphics inspired by the recently revised Silverado 1500. A configurable heads-up display is also available. Physical new audio control knobs balance out the digital dominance. The interior features leather upholstery and real wooden accents on the doors and the dashboard depending on the trim level.

Adaptive cruise control is the latest and new driver assistance feature to be found on the 2024 Silverado HD pickup. It complements the suite of standard active safety features such as Front Pedestrian Detection and Braking, Forward Collision Alert and Automatic Emergency Braking, among others.

Chevrolet claims the new Silverado will make its public debut on September 29 at the State Fair of Texas. Production is set to commence by the first half of 2023, with the pricing details announced closer to that time.
