Carlos Alcaraz wins the 2022 US Open !
The 19-year-old Spanish prodigy defeated Casper Ruud in the final (6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3) to claim his first major and the throne of world No. 1.
With Alcaraz (19) and Ruud (23), it was the youngest US Open final in over 20 years. At the end of four sets and a hard-fought battle, it was the younger man who prevailed. After Carlito had expressed his joy by falling to the ground, there was a nice handshake showing a lot of respect between these two gems of world tennis. In the end, Carlos Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title and became the youngest world No. 1 in history. Norwegian Casper Ruud, on the other hand, will have the consolation of moving from 7th to 2nd place in the ATP rankings.
The two men put on the show that was expected. The public got their money’s worth with some crazy exchanges, remarkable defences, exceptional forehands and backhands !
Alcaraz started the match perfectly by quickly taking his opponent’s serve. He then proved to be solid to keep his lead and take the first set. In the second, they held each other for a while, but Ruud accelerated at the perfect moment and made a double break at the end of the set to win 6-2. Alcaraz seemed to be weakening.
And although he broke at the start of the third set, the slump was still visible and the debreak quickly followed. Ruud seemed to be the most dominant force in the final at this moment, but Carlito’s mental strength disagreed. In the suffering, he recovered with important first shots and an ace to save a set point. He finally held on to the Norwegian to take him into a tie-break that went largely to his advantage (7-1), a symbol of his renewed confidence and level of play.
Alcaraz kept this high level and delivered a fourth set in which he converted his only break point and then concluded the match with a final game in which he gave Casper no chance.
The main lesson of this final : with these two, tennis is in good hands.
