At the front, the bucket seats and metallic dashboard inserts feel exceptionally premium. However, the fixed front headrests pose a practical challenge for Sikhs wearing turbans. Moving to the back, the flat floor creates a genuinely spacious environment. The rear seats comfortably accommodate two medium-sized adults, even with a baby chair installed.
In terms of visibility, the three rear headrests restrict the view through the rear windscreen. However, the overall practicality remains strong. The boot easily swallows a proper-sized baby stroller alongside two medium suitcases. Finally, the build quality is stellar. During extensive testing, the cabin remained completely silent, with no squeaks or rattles.
What features does the BYD Sealion 7 have?
The BYD Sealion 7 packs a comprehensive list of creature comforts. The high-resolution digital instrument cluster delivers crisp text and features a customisable layout. The driver’s attention warning technology was unresponsive during testing, though a swift software update will likely resolve this minor glitch.
The centrepiece is the 15.6-inch rotatable infotainment display. It handles commands effortlessly, and wireless Android Auto works flawlessly. A 12-speaker audio system provides rich, clear sound. However, navigating multiple sub-menus to adjust basic car settings on the move proves slightly frustrating.
Other notable features include ambient lighting, Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, and blind-spot camera feeds. The Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) perform seamlessly. Crucially, drivers can switch off select features. This flexibility is fantastic for navigating chaotic Indian traffic. Furthermore, the powerful air conditioning and ventilated seats effortlessly handle 43 degrees Celsius heat.
How does it feel to drive?
The Performance variant of the BYD Sealion 7 delivers a serious, instantaneous punch. The acceleration easily pins occupants to their seats. Consequently, it outpaces most daily traffic with absolute ease.
The suspension holds up well on smooth tarmac. It offers excellent ride quality and cornering stability. However, Gurugram’s broken interior roads present a different challenge. Here, the 20-inch rims, low-profile tyres, and firm suspension result in a jittery ride. Off the tarmac, the EV handles loose sand and twisty stretches surprisingly well, maintaining unyielding grip throughout.
What about the mileage?
Real-world testing reveals an interesting energy consumption pattern. A 200 km drive in heavy, stop-start traffic with sudden bursts of acceleration dropped the battery from 98 per cent to 38 per cent. This equates to roughly a 30 per cent drop in battery per 100 km.
This test highlights a noticeable gap between the claimed NEDC range and real-world performance under heavy load. However, it remains a respectable figure for aggressive driving. Driven with a sensible foot, the BYD Sealion 7 will undoubtedly stretch its range much further.
Who should consider the BYD Sealion 7?
The BYD Sealion 7 demands a premium. This is especially true when compared to conventionally powered vehicles in the INR 50-60 lakh bracket. The brand’s growing but nascent service network in India also requires careful consideration.
Despite these factors, the crossover remains a formidable contender. It serves modern families better than many similarly priced SUVs. Furthermore, it appeals perfectly to younger buyers seeking a stylish, quiet, and potent EV. Ultimately, the car conquers Gurugram’s challenging roads without breaking a sweat. That is perhaps the highest praise a daily driver can earn.
