AXL Sharx-5 Breaks Cover In Dubai

The EV is powered by an electric motor, potent enough to clock 100kmph from zero in 7.4 seconds.

Canadian automotive brand AXL Electric Vehicles (AXL) took the wraps off its first global offering at an event in Dubai, UAE. The model, called Sharx-5, is a mid-size SUV solely powered by electricity. The EV is up for grabs via its official website. And the estimated delivery timeline will vary with the market chosen. For the GCC countries, for instance, deliveries of the AXL Sharx-5 are likely to commence in Spring next year.

Making its world premiere, the Sharx-5 measures 4,770mm in length, 1,890mm in width, and 1,680mm in height, while its wheelbase stretches 2,810mm. Courtesy of those figures, the five-seater has plenty of space for both living and non-living things. There’s an 857.3-litre boot for the latter, which can gulp up to 1,905.4 litres with the rear seats fold.

The Sharx-5 is powered by one electric motor, which produces 209hp/335Nm. That’s enough for the EV to hit 100kmph from a standstill in 7.4 seconds and clock a top speed of 160kmph. The powerplant is backed by a 67.1kWh battery pack. It can be replenished via AC as well as DC chargers. Regarding charging time, a Level-2 charger would take around 9 hours to charge the battery. That wait time drops to 30 minutes when using a recommended fast charger. Range? AXL claims that the Sharx-5 can travel up to 500km before the battery pack runs out of juice. And, of course, the energy recuperation system is part of the package as well.

The Sharx-5 rides on 20-inch aluminium alloy wheels, accompanied by disc brakes. Other features on the exterior include LED-powered front and rear lights, an integrated 360-degree camera, heated and powered wing mirrors and a fixed panoramic sunroof glass. The cabin is draped in PVC synthetic leather. And as far as the list of creature comforts is concerned, it includes electric front seats, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, automatic parking function, Lane Keeping/Centering Assists, Blind Spot Detection system and an Android-powered infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and voice command. And thanks to 4G connectivity, the car can receive OTA software updates and offer a range of connected-car features, including ADAS.

There’s an options list with white exterior paint, black wheels, light interior colour, rose trim and an AXL wall charger. The starting price for the AXL Sharx-5 is USD 38,900.
