Australian Open 2024: Jannik Sinner topples Daniil Medvedev in the final to claim his first ever Grand Slam title
Sinner beat Medvedev in a huge match (3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3) and was crowned champion for the first time in a major tournament.
This morning on the Rod Laver Arena court, 22-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner rounded off his magnificent fortnight in Australia by winning the crown. In the final of this Australian Open 2024, he caused a sensation by turning the tables on world No. 3 Daniil Medvedev of Russia. Trailing two sets to nil (3-6, 3-6), the San Candido native was clearly dominated by Medvedev. At the back of the court, the Russian defended and counter-attacked more than well, while Sinner made too many mistakes. But it was on the physical level that the man who beat Djokovic in the semi-finals made the difference. Sinner was solid in the third set and didn’t flinch, then raised his game and stepped up a gear in the next two sets. Comeback accomplished, 3-6 / 3-6 / 6-4 / 6-4 / 6-3 in 3 hours and 46 minutes. Sinner, 4th in the ATP rankings, thus clinched the first Grand Slam title of his career.
