ATP Toronto: Sinner dominates de Minaur in final to win his first Masters 1000 title

The Italian gave the Australian no chance (6-4, 6-1)

This Sunday, on center court at Toronto’s Sobeys Stadium, Jannik Sinner won his first Masters 1000 title. He defeated Alex de Minaur in two short sets, 6-4, 6-1 and 1h20 of play.

After a final unforced error from Australian Alex de Minaur, Jannik Sinner was finally able to exult. With his hands on his knees and a big smile on his face, the 21-year-old Italian, became a Masters 1000 winner for the first time, after losing two finals (Miami 2021 and 2023). And to do so, he had to fight hard in the first set, then unwind in the second. In the first set, Sinner took his opponent’s first serve, but lost his own immediately. He did it again in the middle of the set, but the San Candido native broke for the third time at 5-4 to win the set. And although de Minaur made a number of unforced errors, which was quite unusual, things got worse for the Australian in the final set. 21 in total, admittedly a little less than Sinner (24), who has a more aggressive game and is therefore more prone to errors. On the other hand, De Minaur hit only 3 winners, while Sinner hit around 15. The Italian gave de Minaur no chance, a player he knows well and against whom he has never lost a match (5-0). In any case, in terms of results, both Sinner and de Minaur enjoyed the best week of their careers. With this title, the Italian is now ranked 6th in the world, his highest ranking ever. With his final victory, the 24-year-old Australian is now ranked 12th in the world, also a career-high.
