At just 19, Coco Gauff triumphs in the US Open final after beating Aryna Sabalenka

American Cori Gauff wins the 2023 US Open, beating Sabalenka 2-6 / 6-3 / 6-2

On this Saturday evening on the court of Arthur Ashe Stadium, Coco Gauff made history. At the age of 19, the young American ranked 6th in the world is crowned US Open champion after its success in three sets against the BiĂ©lorusse Aryna Sabalenka (2-6, 6-3, 6-2). This is Gauff’s first Grand Slam title.

That evening in New York on September 10, 2023 will be forever etched in Coco Gauff’s memory. At just 19 years of age, the native of Delray Beach, Florida, shone in the final, winning the US Open in front of her home crowd. After being clearly outplayed and dominated by Aryna Sabalenka in the first set (2-6), the American reversed the trend in this final, buoyed by a demented atmosphere and the support of a crowd totally committed to her cause. The next two sets were marked by an enormous gain in confidence and self-assurance in her game. Gauff made far fewer mistakes and played more accurately, unlike the Belarusian, who was gradually sinking. The American’s incredible defensive qualities gradually overwhelmed the world No.2. 6-3 / 6-2 to turn the match on its head and win her first major tournament.

As of Monday, Cori Gauff, on the strength of this title and her gold-crowned American summer, will be ranked No. 3 in the world. For her part, Aryna Sabalenka can take comfort in the fact that she has taken over first place in the WTA rankings from Iga Swiatek. In her post-match speech, the Belarussian confessed that this No. 1 ranking was the greatest achievement of her season.
