Asics unveils lightest ever CO2 emission sneakers

The new GEL-LYTE III CM produces just 1.95kg CO2 emissions, significantly lower than anything on the market currently

A study conducted by MIT in 2013 found that a typical pair of running shoes generates approximately 13.6 kilograms of CO₂ emissions in its life cycle. Though Asics has now come out with an all-new GEL-LYTE III CM 1.95 sneakers that boast a mere 1.95kg CO2 emissions across its life cycle, making it significantly lighter than the lowest CO2e sneakers currently available.

Asics claims the GEL-LYTE III CM 1.95 sneakers result from over a decade of research and development with MIT. Gains across the four critical stages of the product life cycle, namely materials and manufacturing, transportation, use and end-of-life, have allowed Asics to stay aligned with its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Apart from the lowered carbon footprint, the GEL-LYTE III CM 1.95 sneakers also introduce a new carbon-negative foam. Made from a fusion of bio-based polymers derived partly from sugarcanes, the foam gets infused as part of the midsole and the sock liner to provide comfort and quality sustainably.

More sustainable practices have been deployed, such as using recycled and solution-dyed polyester in the main upper material and the sock liner mesh. A new structure utilizing tape enables less material used during production. Asics boasts of applying 100% renewable energy throughout the manufacturing phase.

Yasuhito Hirota, ASICS CEO, said: “ASICS has long believed in the powerful intrinsic link between sport and the mind. That’s why we’re so committed to doing our part to ensure the long-term viability of our planet. That way we can ensure that future generations can continue to experience the uplifting impact of sport on the mind. To achieve a sound mind in a sound body, you need a sound earth to move on, after all. The road ahead maybe long but the GEL-LYTE III CM 1.95 is our latest statement of intent on this journey. We hope it can help inspire real positive change in the sports industry on the way to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.”

The GEL-LYTE III CM 1.95 sneaker will be widely available in-store and online at asics.com from the autumn-winter season of 2023.
