Now smaller and more compact, this versatile watch is available in three dial versions with a stainless steel bracelet (one dial version gets a rubber strap option) and powered by an automatic movement.

“The first model features a turquoise dial that’s a positive enticement to go off exploring. Its radiant hue, rarely seen in watchmaking, conjures up everything from the invigorating chill of mountain lakes to lagoon snorkelling expeditions. A second alternative sports a fir green dial more evocative of the mountain slopes of the brand’s Alpine home. The third timepiece to come on a steel strap features a beige dial recalling the ramparts of the Swiss Alps in summer – rocky inclines just waiting to be tackled by mountaineers. The same dial colour is also available on a fourth variation that comes on a matching rubber strap.”

Case

Made from 316L stainless steel, with brushed and polished finishes. Case diameter is 39 mm * 40.50 mm. Case thickness is 11.50 mm. 3-part case. Bezel features 6 small circles with a triangle (brand’s emblem) at 2,4,6,8,10 and 12 o’clock. Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on dial side. See through caseback, screwed to the main case. Screw-down crown at 3 o’clock, embossed with a triangle – the brand’s emblem. Water resistant up to 20 ATM / 200 metres / 660 feet.

“The iconic Extreme case could be described as almost square or almost round, combining the flexibility of a perfect circle with the imposing shape of a square softened by rounded edges. One thing is certain: the new 39 x 40.5-millimetre format gives this Alpiner Extreme Automatic a more compact and thus edgier feel, making it ideal to be worn either on a bare wrist on a long hike – or discreetly beneath a shirt sleeve in a business meeting.”

Bracelet and Strap versions

All three versions come with a stainless steel bracelet, with brushed and polished finishes, featuring a folding buckle with a push button.

Pebble Beige dial version available with a rubber strap, featuring a folding buckle with a push button.

“True to its sporty, chic and impactful style, Alpina has taken care to provide a satin finish for the case and bracelet links. As well as being a traditional decoration in fine watchmaking, it’s also a fitting cladding for a sporty timepiece: the innumerable bumps and scratches that invariably come with the Alpiner Extreme Automatic lifestyle will leave scarcely a trace. A polished finish is reserved for the piece’s vanishing lines on the bezel surround, crown and case, as well as the outer edges of the bracelet. Collectors will also appreciate the hand-polished appliqué hour markers.”

Movement

Powered by automatic calibre AL-525, which drives the hours, minutes, seconds, and date. It is based on Sellita calibre SW200. 26 jewels. 28,800 vph or 4 Hz. Power reserve 38 hours. According to online sources, the Sellita SW200 features a hacking second for precise time setting.

Our Thoughts

The Alpiner Extreme Automatic is testament to the fact that watchmaking does not have to be exorbitantly expensive to be interesting and meaningful. It is a great looking timepiece, full of interesting dial and case details, and relatively affordable. Its new compact dimensions will appeal to a greater number of collectors, who found the earlier version too large for their wrists.

It makes a solid case for an interesting and reliable everyday timepiece, and one which can be used for sports. Its movement is based on Sellita’s SW200, a robust and dependable movement, easily serviceable worldwide, and will provide a stress-free ownership experience.

I would love to see the Alpiner Extreme Automatic in the flesh. I could see myself owning either the Turquoise or Fir Green version. It would be great to see the rubber strap option rolled out on both these dial versions too.
