Drive The Porsche 911 GT3 RS At Yas Marina: Your Turn To Chase The Apex

Yas Marina Circuit’s new GT3 RS experience puts Porsche’s 9,000rpm masterpiece within reach, at a relatively affordable price.

There is something faintly tragic about a Porsche 911 GT3 RS spending its life outside cafés. All that suspension engineering, all that aero, and its toughest assignment is negotiating a basement parking ramp. Thank the engineering Gods for the front suspension lift feature, but its at a racetrack that its suspension really comes into its own.

Thankfully, Yas Marina Circuit has decided to put the GT RS in the spotlight.

The Abu Dhabi venue has launched its Porsche 911 GT3 RS (992) Experience, allowing enthusiasts to drive one of Stuttgart’s most coveted machines on track. There is also a passenger experience with a professional racing driver, should you prefer someone else to demonstrate quite how early you have been braking.

The GT3 RS Appeal

Porsche’s RS obsession stretches back to the Carrera RS 2.7, unveiled in 1972. Those letters stand for Rennsport, German for racing. The first road-going GT3 RS followed in 2003, establishing a bloodline that has made weight reduction, response and circuit performance deeply desirable.

A GT3 RS appeals to a particular sort of petrolhead. Someone who admires a beautifully executed downshift, understands why steering feedback matters, and considers tyre wear a great topic to discuss at the dinner table.

The 992 takes that obsession to extraordinary lengths. Its 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six produces 518hp, and 465Nm. Peak power arrives at 8,500rpm; the limiter is set at 9,000rpm! A seven-speed PDK sends all that power and torque to the rear wheels, pushing it from 0 to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds and on to a 296km/h top speed.

In an industry increasingly accustomed to electric assistance and enormous torque at barely any revs, an engine that rewards being worked this hard has its own appeal.

The Go-Faster Elements

The GT3 RS generates 409kg of downforce at 200km/h and 860kg at 285km/h. Its towering rear wing works with active front aerodynamic elements, while a drag reduction system allows the wings to flatten within defined operating conditions.

Even the front luggage compartment has surrendered its space to a large central radiator. Inside, full bucket seats hold the occupants, while steering-wheel controls allow adjustments to the dampers and rear differential. An analogue rev counter sits between two seven-inch displays, perfect for track driving.

This is precisely why the circuit experience makes sense. You need corners, braking zones and room to build confidence, and then understand what those engineers have been doing.

Porsche At Abu Dhabi’s Grand Prix Venue

For car enthusiasts in the UAE, Yas Marina carries its own emotional weight. This is the home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a venue familiar from championship finales and countless televised laps, some of them more memorable than the others.

Driving on this track remains a dream for many. And driving a hardcore GT3 RS at Yas is a bucket list item that you can now tick off.

The experience uses either the South Circuit or North Corkscrew Circuit, subject to availability and confirmation when purchasing.

How Much Does The GT3 RS Experience Cost?

The driving experience costs AED 3,400 and includes seven laps, one of which is a cooling lap at reduced speed. Yas lists approximately 60 minutes for the complete experience, covering registration, briefing, preparation, driving, and departure.

An instructor introduces the car and its controls, with a helmet, balaclava, gloves, and mandatory race suit provided. Drivers must be at least 17 and hold the appropriate valid permanent driving licence.

The passenger experience comprises three laps, including a cooling lap, with a professional racing driver at the wheel. Bookings and current requirements are available through Yas Marina Circuit’s website.

AED 3,400 might look like a lot of money for just seven laps. For someone who has spent years watching GT3 RS onboard videos, though, the appeal is easy to understand. You get a GT3 RS on an FIA Grade 1 track! It doesn’t get better than that for Porsche enthusiasts.
