What is the new Hublot Classic Fusion Balloon Dog and MP-14 Origin, both by Jeff Koons?

Jeff Koons is a world-renowned artist known for his unique interpretation of popular culture, especially his “mirrored balloon sculptures.” With the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog, he has transformed “the emotional language of inflatables into a radical object of horology.” It is presented in three editions: red, blue and silver.

The MP-14 Origin is a different take on artistic expression by Jeff Koons. It combines contemporary art fused with high-end watchmaking featuring an automatic central tourbillon, the latter a first for Hublot. Comprising of sapphire, titanium, and a gem-set white gold construction, it expresses “the creation of the cosmos on a micro scale – as if capturing the very origin of everything at the moment it begins to expand.”

Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons

The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog is inspired by Jeff Koon’s Balloon Dog (1994 – 2000) from his Celebration series. It “takes a universally familiar object, the balloon animal and transforms it into something permanent. What is fragile, temporary, and playful becomes monumental, precise, and enduring. A fleeting childhood gesture is fixed into industrial perfection.”

The crown is made from anodised aluminium and rubber in the red and blue editions and stainless steel and rubber in the silver edition. It evokes the design of a balloon’s inflation valve. The brand has put significant effort into the design and construction of the strap and not left it as an afterthought. It too evokes an inflated effect.

Case measures 42 mm (diameter) * 11 mm (thickness). Dial side features a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment. Caseback features a sapphire crystal. Water resistant up to 5 ATM or approximately 50 metres. The strap features a grey rubber base with a recessed metallic silver polymer insert leather insert with tone-on-tone grey stitching. It is fitted with a stainless steel deployant buckle.

Movement: All three editions are powered by HUB1710, an automatic movement that drives the central hours, minutes, seconds, and date. It measures 25.60 mm (diameter) * 3.70 mm (thickness), comprises 185 parts and 27 jewels, beats at 4 Hz or 28,800 vph and delivers a power reserve of 50 hours.

The MP-14 Origin belongs to Hublot’s Exceptional Timepieces collection, the brand’s “experimental laboratory” for high-end watchmaking where they push the frontiers of horological concepts, materials and architectures.

Image: The MP-14 Origin’s case is an octagonal-shaped transparent sapphire box, requiring about 534 hours of machining. Notice the Hublot “ears” at 3 and 9 o’clock, featuring the H-shaped titanium screws. Both are signature design elements of the brand. The dial is designed as a gravitational system, featuring four 18K white gold concentric rings. The two outer rings are fixed, featuring 48 baguette-cut diamonds and 12 blue sapphires on the outer ring and 56 baguette-cut diamonds and 4 blue sapphires on the inner ring. The rotating minute ring features 47 baguette-cut diamonds and rotating hour ring features 35 baguette-cut diamonds. In total, 202 precious stones measuring about 2.6 carats. The transparent sapphire dome is inspired by Jeff Koons’ Gazing Ball works. It is hand-coated in a translucent blue varnish performed by a micro painter. “The concealed central tourbillon becomes the system’s origin. It’s the mechanical “first pulse” from which the entire structure appears to expand.” It is the brand’s first central tourbillon. The Gazing Ball works was a Jeff Koons art collection launched in 2013, that focused on “hand-blown blue glass spheres placed on or in front of exact reproductions of classical sculptures and master paintings.”

Its dial is made from polished sapphire crystal, featuring concentric rings made from 18K white gold. The rings are set with baguette-cut diamonds and blue sapphires. Hours and minutes are indicated by the two innermost rotating rings featuring two stainless steel cubes. The hour cube is polished and features a translucent red varnish, and the minute cube is polished. Its case is made from polished sapphire crystal and titanium, measuring 44 mm (diameter) * 20 mm (thickness). Dial side features a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment. Water resistant up to 3 ATM or approximately 30 metres. The strap is made from sapphire crystal and is fitted to a titanium deployant buckle.

It is powered by HUB9014, an automatic central tourbillon movement that drives the hours and minutes. It measures 39.20 mm (diameter) * 14.65 mm (thickness), comprises 594 parts and 55 jewels, beats at 3 Hz or 21,600 vph and delivers a power reserve of 60 hours. The movement features an anthracite coloured ruthenium-plated peripheral automatic winding rotor.

What do we think?

Hublot has few equals when it comes to experimenting with bold designs, materials, colours and collaborations in watchmaking. After all, how many brands can craft a Novak Djokovic tennis-inspired watch featuring a tourbillon, a sapphire crystal watch with a vertical time indication and a tourbillon, a hand-wound watch with a 10-day power reserve housed in a sapphire crystal case and the iconic Big Bang Original crafted from an innovative material? And this is not all.

Hublot has significant expertise in sapphire. “The designation MP-14 alludes to the number 14, a significant reference in Jeff Koons’s career. In 1980, his first solo exhibition was held at the New Museum in New York, then located at 65 Fifth Avenue at 14th Street, linking the number to a defining early milestone in his artistic journey.”

All three editions of the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog highlight the brand’s ability to transform Jeff Koons’ world-renowned popular-culture art into a watch without sacrificing the brand’s DNA. The MP-14 Origin highlights the brand’s ability to experiment, both technically (their first central tourbillon) and aesthetically (an avant-garde design with inspiration from Jeff Koons), into a watch that is as unconventional as it is audacious.
